  1. An open can of cat food [ fish is best ] works wonders on hungry fox. Drives them absolutely nuts. Worked good on an aggressive gray male a few years back. We couldn't walk out outside at night w/ out him coming after us. Cat food + .223 AR-10 + patience = peace. The rest got the message.
  2. My "lesson" came when I loaned my 2 yr old SM Lazer to a buddy. He returned it w/ the pull cord ripped out. I spent an afternoon repairing it, no problems since but it was quite an experience figuring out how to put back together. Also learned from an ice guide that you don't need that big 8"/ 10" auger to catch fish. I picked up smaller 6" auger for my SM and fell in love w/ it. Much less torque and a lot faster cut. Makes a big difference if you're into drilling a lot of holes. I got the auger from Reed's at the end of season for 75 bucks. Well worth it.
  3. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/chi-cougar-killed-on-northeast-illinois-farm-20131121,0,2495757.story IL DNR officer shot/ killed mature male in Morrison, IL on 11/20/13. It appears to be the wild kind. Makes you wonder how many are out there watching us and we don't know it. Pure survival machines! Sad to see it killed, but exited to see these cats are adapting and trying to expand their ranges. I'm sure not everyone agrees...
  4. Before you get in too deep, I would suggest 3M #09005 Marine Restorer & Wax. Retails for less than $20. You have a small boat. OMIT THE BUFFER!! and apply by hand only w/ wet cheesecloth. Test on small inconspicuous area of the metal flake. I have a 34' and it takes less than a day to do hull and superstructure w/ 1 bottle by hand. I think you'll be pleased w/ results and you can't beat the price.

    NO SPARK

Agree w/ Surface Tension. It sounds like its grounded out. I would go thru power supply from battery to ignition. A 12V tester is very useful for diagnosis.
  6. Not exactly how it works. The Academy pays each cadet a stipend of around 900/ month from which is deducted: Dept of Defense laptop computer 4500.00 [ Lenovo, made in China/ go figure ], uniforms and uniform dry cleaning, regulation boots and dress shoes, meal allowance, and books, etc. My kid usually has about 50- 100 bucks left over per month. No, shooters are required to furnish their own fire arms. It didn't bother me because the Academy coaches, who are both former gold and silver Olympians, find a way [thru left-overs or generous donors] to furnish cadets who lack funds to purchase their own [ which is a good thing IMO ]. I'm grateful that my daughter has an opportunity to attend one of the premier military universities by virtue of her grades and shooting abilities. She is eager to serve our country and pursue her dream career as an officer. It gives me a renewed appreciation for ALL the young people in all branches of the military who serve our country every day and I pray for them all.
  7. hsolist has them listed for $169.00. MSRP new $263.00. No big deal IMO. My daughter shoots for Air Force Academy in both .177 air rifle and 22LR [ smallbore ]. Her air rifle [ Anschutz 9003 Premium ] set me back $3200. Her 22LR gun[ Anschutz 1913 ]set me back another 2700. I hope this puts things in perspective...
  8. Just a question along the same line. Never owning revolvers until recently, I am curious why more people, especially women, don't consider them for CnC. They are simple to use, never jam/ shovepipe, no safeties to mess with, simple to aim and shoot, and can be much more compact than semi-autos in the larger calibers.
  9. As an avid motor head, "cheating" in motorsports is a common everyday occurrence. The only way to get a performance over the completion is to try different combinations. NASCAR teams thru out its history have ALWAYS tried this approach. Its called a "liberal interpretation of the rules". Smokey Yunich built perfect 7/8 scale cars. Richard Petty drove cars that lowered themselves after hitting the 1st hard bump. His engine builder/ cousin, Dale Inman was kicked out for life for building oversize cubic inch motors, Ken Schrader got caught cheating by using hollowed out carb studs on plate tracks, Uncle Mikey got caught using doped up fuel, Jeff Gordon got caught using carbon fiber brake rotors, Carl Edwards and Jimmie Johnson were both caught using dummy oil tanks that pressurized the interior of their cars to create xtra downforce, and the list goes on and on. Kenseth has just "joined the club".
  10. Yesterday's race was the worst I can remember by far, and I've watched them all since 1977. The FOX race announcers are stale at best, the GEN6 car is an abortion IMO, and you have to endure 5 hrs of commercials to boot. Drivers can't pass, the cars look awful, extremely boring to watch. NASCAR has submitted itself to the designs of corporate America and the networks 20 years ago and is reaping its rewards. I'll watch golf on Sundays from no on...
  11. My S/M had similar symptom as yours [ ran fine @ high speed, had a bad idle ]. As I was removing the fuel tank, I found the carb was loose. Tightened the carb, it's been fine since. Check the screws running thru the tank. The carb is sandwiched between the tank and engine. Hope this helps.
  12. I recently purchased a very clean [used] Charter Arms .44 Special Bulldog. I've never owned a revolver before and am curious if anyone out there w/ a similar piece has a preference of one brand/ type ammo over another. I was impressed by the extremely smooth and easy double action trigger. Thanks for any input!
  13. Don't panic. There's probably nothing wrong w/ it. My S-M Lazer w/ 8" auger bit does the same thing when I test fire it. It cuts fast and true thru the ice w/ no wobble. The auger blade centering spike eliminates the wobble/ imbalance when drilling on ice. I did pick up a 6" auger bit for it thru Reed's in Walker 2 years ago for $90 [ off season ]. What a difference. It takes a lot less torque to get thru the ice, is much faster, lighter, and it doesn't get stuck at the bottom of the hole right when you're about to puncture thru. Brian Brosdahl showed me that trick. That guy drills ALOT of holes and you don't need 8"-10" holes to catch big fish!
  14. +1 I agree 100%. Are you by chance a prison guard?
  15. I've done extremely well for perch on Cass the last 5 years. 7-10' has been the desired depth. Pretty decent travel as it seems to get beat up pretty good by then...
  16. Deepest sympathies on your loss. I've been there a few times. May I suggest visiting a shelter when your ready. Too many deserving animals are just waiting to touch someones heart. Just giving one a chance at a good life and home is the finest way to honor Shrimpo. They can never take her place, but can fill her space. Take care.
  17. What you have heard is true. Unbelievable spring king bite that I have never seen in 34 yrs charter fishing Lake Michigan. The only downside is that over half of the coho caught are still eating bugs [ black flys, butterflys, ladybugs ]. They have NO alewife in their stomachs and are considerably smaller than they should be at this time of year. This concerns me as there is ample baitfish around. At the IL/ WISC border, the majority of coho remain in deeper water [ 100+ ft ] and haven't visited the shallows yet this year, forcing charter boats to burn a lot more fuel. Water temperatures are around 53 F near shore which is usual for this time of year. Is this the new "normal"? Not quite sure...
  18. Last spring a semi hit a big one on I-94 right next to the truck scales east of Woodbury. It must have been about 400# class. I thought it was someone's sofa until I got close...
  19. I bought a Beretta Bobcat 22LR for the wife 2 years ago. Pluses are: VERY compact, easy to conceal [ about the size of a kid's squirt gun ]; 22LR is cheap accessible ammo [ I have found the CCI High Velocity shoots best ]. Extremely loud gun for its size [ scares the wife though...] Minuses: Innaccurate beyond 10 ft.; has a tendency to jam occasionally; small magazine capacity. 22LR will penetrate a vest though. I would recommend it as an excellent backup weapon, not primary though.
  20. Barn swallows arrived here in NE ILL last week. They are already building nests underneath our concrete piers in Waukegan Harbor. They are pretty fearless little fellows and could care less about human presence. Always their arrival coincides w/ appearance of winged insects. We now have both. They are on their way. I also noticed alot of north-bound Common loons the last few weeks. Usually in groups of 3-7 birds each, they are in one big hurry north.
  21. Sound's like your hub bearing is telling you its time. If it's a '02 and never been changed, you're overdue. I had one grenade on me @ 55 mph in a tight curve. I heard popping noises right before it went.
  22. I have a few 9mms and I've owned a Berretta 92fs Inox for 10 yrs now. Extremely reliable, very accurate and has never jammed once w/ 2000+ rounds to date. I paid around $700 new. I know that used ones in police/ military finish sell for less than 1/2 what I paid. I visited my daughter @ Air Force Academy last Sept and the MP's are still carrying them for their sidearms. Good enough for me.
  23. Cougars tend to drag or bounce their tails along ground while walking if they are relaxed. Their tails are heavy and will leave a line in snow. Same for otters.
  24. Agree 100%. I've had Ice Armour Onyx boots 3+ yrs now and won't go back. However the clam boot is so much lighter, easy to get on and my feet have always been warm even when sitting for extended period of time.
