technical question about propane to oxygen ratio

maybe someone knows something about this? i have a propane heater/stove that i bought off of hsolist today. the previous owner put a home made propnae delivery system on it. he did a great job, except the propane is burning dirty and orange, not clean and blue like i want. the problem appears to be a lack of oxygen, there are no air holes in the tube delivering propane to the burner. i think its a 3/8 in tube, but thats just a guess. ill have to investigate further. what would be a good hole size to introduce some o2 into the mix? my mr heater sunflower seems to have a 2:1 ratio for air holes. 2 holes that are both almost as big as the tube delivering propane. anyone know anything about this?

Is there any way to put an air shutter on the pipe? Like what a commercial range has. It would be adjustable & work very well if possible. If not - I would start w/ a small hole size, try it, drill larger until you get a clean burning flame.

thats probably what im going to do, i think ill start with a 1/8 in or so. luckily its just a threaded copper pipe ill be drilling into, so if i screw up i can just buy a new one
