Leeches and Walleyes

Redlantern

Question

I'm not much of a walleye fisherman but brought some leeches with me to the BWCA last week and had some luck fishing for them, however, I did notice that the leeches tend to get wrapped up in the line. I was using a slip bobber and a plain hook. How do you avoid this? Would using a jig help keep the leech from wrapping itself up in the snell I was using?

Also, what's the best way to hook them? Through the sucker? In the middle? Hook them twice? We had a little trouble with the leeches falling off, also.

Thanks for any advice you can give.

We brought along a variety of colored jig heads in 1/16, 1/8 and 1/4 oz sizes and tied them directly onto the line and hooked the leech just behind the sucker. We jigged them off the bottom without bobbers and had no problem with tangling or twisting. You'd get a bite in less than 2 minutes. The BWCA was the best fishing I've ever experienced.
