Rigging up a 24 volt trolling motor- I need help!

phishhead

Question

I am re-doing my boat and I have a used 24 volt Minn Kota auto pilot 48 lb. thrust trolling motor. My questions are: Do I wire the batteries parallel or series? Also, I am having trouble finding room for two batteries in the front of the boat - should both batteries have the same reserve capacity and maximum cranking amps? I can fit the one I have in the rod locker but I would need a smaller one to fit in the front storage compartment Any advice would be helpful - Thanks

You need to wire the batt's in series to obtain 24V. Tie the negative of one battery to the positive to the 2nd battery (jumper wire). You'll then have 24V if you measure with a voltmeter with one lead on the positive of battery #1 and the other lead on the negative of battery #2.

In parallel you'll end up with 12V.
