Deep Cycle Batteries (Gel vs AGM)

Lake Trout

Question

I was set on an Optima gel cell, but have been reading that AGM (absorbed glass mat) are even better for deep cycle use. Cabela's has an AGM for $50 less and is rated higher as far as output. It weighs ten pounds more, though. Any thoughts?

I'm heading to Cabela's this week end to purchase an AGM deep cycle. They don't even sell a gell cell at Cabela's anymore.According to them AGM is the only way to go.Both

battery types are maintenace free. The gell cell will have no acid to leak if you develop a crack.AGM is supposed to

hold a more even charge.

Optima's do have AGM technology.

Here is a blurb from Optima. "In an OPTIMA battery, the lead plates and separator are wound and tightly compressed into a cell tube so they can't move, shed, or break, even in severe shock and vibration applications. In independent SAE tests, the OPTIMA kept working after being subjected to vibrations up to 5G for 12 hours. As in all AGM TECHNOLOGY BATTERIES, there is no "free acid" that can leak out or spill and the OPTIMA can be operated effectively in any position -- even upside down -- without any risk of leaking and because it is sealed, no corrosion can form on the posts, connectors, or cables.
