Mailing a Pole

walkabout

Question

What is the best way to mail a fishing pole from MPLS to Georgia?

I was thinking of using PVC pipe to package the pole, but am unsure as to whether this will be allowed.

Also what is service will be the cheapest for such an odd shape?

Most of the rods that I receive here are just in long cardboard boxes packed with lots of newspaper. Some though are shipped in solid cardboard like rod tubes, but I do know that US Mail charges extra to ship in these tubes. I think US Mail is probably going to be the cheapest but I'm not sure.
Hope this helps.

From 13 yrs. experience - go with UPS or Fed Ex. UPS will be least expensive. Fed Ex is easiest to work with. Tracking is simple and insurance to $100 is included. A little tip - shipping to a business address, if you can do that, will be less expensive than shipping to residential.

Filing a claim is quite simple with either.

Any of that is extra with the postal service and then it's still not as reliable.

If you have a carpet/flooring store in your area, they will have the empty cardboard tubes from carpet. I have shipped many rods in these tubes. They are so rigid you could stand on them and it takes a saw to cut them to length.

Best way to package a rod -- without a doubt! I will cut the tube about 6 inches longer than the rod, put the rod inside, wrapped in bubble wrap, fill the tube with peanuts and then put a block of wood into each end and put some drywall screws in to hold them tight. Then the person who gets it, just removes a few screws and the pole will slide right out.

Good Luck!

Carpet tubes are fine, however, would suggest you go to a local Upholstery Shop or fabric store. The tubes fabric is rolled on is a much smaller diameter and more closley fits the size of a rod. My wife ran a Upholstery business for years and I would guess we gave local tackle shops hundreds of the tubes over the years for mailing rods.
