canoes?

slick2526

Question

Looking into getting a new canoe. I dont know much about them besides they float lol. I want to spend around the 500-700$ range. Im not so concerned about the handleing or how easy it is to paddle. I want something that is more stable.

the main canoes i have seen are old towns. seem to be every where. I was just wondering if any of you could suggest a model or maybe even a dif brand and model.

Thanks

For many years, my sons and I have fished, hunted, camped, and ran rivers in an Old Town 17 foot Discovery. Its not a lightweight boat, but its wide and stable and will take all kinds of abuse. For fishing, it is so much quieter than aluminum that it would be hard to back to a metal boat. We often mount a 30 lb. thrust Minnkota for fishing and we've cruised over schools of fish in the shallows without spooking them. Good and long lasting boat for the money.

If you can find a used ALUMA CRAFT, I have a square back 17 foot cargo that is light and very stable. To cut down on the noise factor, just throw some carpet in the bottom. New they use to go for about $1200, but it is a light weight canoe, and JB weld will fix any holes you put in it on the spot in just minutes. Silicone will give you a good temporary fix. Both are easy to carry and easy to use.

Old Town makes great canoes. It sounds like your preference for stability calls for the Discovery model. I have the Old Town Penobscot. I love it but it is very tippy. The more efficient the hull design the more tippy it will be.
