Chris Granrud
Just a gentle reminder for anglers who like to chase monster pike. I would say 50% of the time we fight a big pike I have customers reference the use of a gaff. As a guy who assists in each and every monster pike encounter all winter long I urge anglers to put that gaff on the wall with your old Swedish spoon auger. Let's briefly discuss two scenario's while ice fishing and tangling with the "Freshwater Shark". Tip up fishing; If your chasing flags you might be utilizing quick set rigs like the ones we use from Big Tooth Tackle. This can add an additional danger in the process and we highly suggest the angler pull the pike out of the hole with the mainline in hand without an assist from the man wet to his shoulder (BEEN THERE). IF the fish were to release in the hole than enter at your own risk. I have always felt I'd rather risk a cut to my hand versus killing an elite caliber fish. In the second scenario a big 22lb pike was hooked while walleye fishing with a jigging spoon. This pike obviously will NOT be hoisted via mainline and needs an assist. As you can see this pike barely fit through an 8 inch hole. As the pike turns his head in the direction of the "Hollywood Topside" carefully slide your hand in the gill being careful to not catch the red gills that will do as much harm to the fish as the fisherman. Once gaining a firm grip like picture here I like to squeeze my thumb on the head of the beast. Pike can sense a loose grip and will thrash when they think they can get away. While we all know that handling big pike is not without some danger, I sincerely hope we all as Ice Team members handle elite caliber fish with care. Return the beast this winter to tangle with it again next summer!!
