Matt Johnson
Yes, there are many options for "portable packs" out there. Are you looking to have GPS built into this unit as well?
Ridgerunnr
Yes..GPS is a goal. I've used flashers (vex) and am amazed how well it works to catch fish. Hoping something like the elite or HD5 would be just as accurate but allow GPS
Matt Johnson
This is a tough one for me, as I won't give up my mechanical flasher like the Vexilar. I understand the importance of having a GPS, but you can't replace the Vexilar when it comes to having the right tool to actually catch the fish. I have played with several Lowrance models out on the ice... LMS-334, HDS-7, etc... and all have sonar capabilities but I still find myself using the full-screen GPS on those models then relying on my Vexilar to actually locate and catch the fish. I have my Lowrance HDS-7 on a Genx Blue Box and run that on full-screen GPS for running from spot-to-spot on the machine... then I pull out the Vexilar when it's time to catch the fish. I understand you're trying to find one system to do it all, and there are definitely options that will allow you to do both, but I still won't give-up my Vexilar when it comes down to the nitty-gritty of fish-catching... That being said though, the HDS-5 model will do both, and might be the option you're looking for... they accept map chips so you can have lake structure shown on your GPS, then you can also turn them into "flasher" mode (or keep it on standard sonar) to mark fish and use it that way... they can also be rigged portable to quick access... Hoping something like the elite or HD5 would be just as accurate but allow GPS The Elite 5 is a great choice having owned a few Lowrance multi use units I would say would go for it. The x68 with GPS was a great unit but not chip-able but the run time on one battery was the best I've ever seen, meaning great for fly in or BWCA trips. Almost 4 days on one battery. My Elite 5 almost makes it two days on one battery. One great add on is to purchase a new Lithium Ion battery long run time and a third of the weight. http://www.solarsportsman.com/products/batteries/
