SE MN Stream conditions????

Chicago boy

Recommended Posts

Thinking about making the opener this year. Missed it last year and paid the price as I heard it was a great experience. Commuting from the Chicago area. Can anyone provide some stream condition details? I know we have 3 wks but I'm excited.

Thanks,

CB

current outlook right now shows a little more snow on friday.. then nothing.. but its gonna be cold.. below freezing temps will stop the remaining thaw.. lets just hope today and friday is the last of the precip and streams should be alright.. tiny streams will be your best bet.. i'd imagine most of the root will be in sub par conditions

i didn't notice you were from chicago at first... i'd stay there personally and wait for Wisconsin opener where you probably will have a better chance of catching trout.. driving 6 hrs to water conditions that may not be favorable sounds like a waste of money to me.. especially with the gas prices.. just keep an eye on weather in our area and check different maps(usgs and the dnr conditions ted posted)

Assume April 16 Minnesota trout opener. Feel free to start fishing right now if you like. MN has 32 select streams until end of the month. Then April 1 opens all southeast MN streams. WI streams are open for the pre-season.

As for the official MN opener time will tell. Guessing it will be a low warmer and the rivers will be fishable as long as we don't get significant rain. Grounds are at 100% saturation and have been since last fall. Record flooding in lots of areas expected. Sand bags in Hastings, talking about another 100 year old flood. What are the predictions for your neck of the woods? All of that rain we had the other day poured into the rivers because the ground is still frozen. I am hoping more water fishable come Sunday. Fishable water can probably be found right now, however I'd rather things warm up again and turn green. I am so ready for spring time and trout fishing.

Spent Sunday morning on Mazeppa Creek, still roiling after overnight thunderstorms. A better time at Cold Spring Brook, nicely cleared out and warming (49 degree water temp at noon). A few BWO's and assorted buggy's lifting off as the sun warmed the afternoon; rising trout spotted above the corner pool, although none hooked by me. Just nice to be on the stream after a brutal winter. Bloodies and cigars streamside after fishing rounded out a lovely day.

    • Yeah it was a beatdown
    • Your kid needs to stay with him!👍
    • My kid was eating in Beverly Hills and ran into this guy. Talked to him a bit and wished him luck in the game tonight.
    • 🤔as a recovering machinist!🤣🤣that must make me a recovering welder!
    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
