HugoBox
So my brother and I got out for a couple pre-work hours this AM for a bit of fishing and discussion on the seriousness with which us musky chasers take ourselves (a story in and of itself for another day and post.) We were in some pretty thick weeds - I'm pretty sure he wanted to beat with his rod handle. That said we had a couple try to eat at or near boat - fishing spinners and WTDs. What do you do at boatsided when there literally isn't room to dig the rod in and spin an 8 or an oval? Would you just toss back the same thing a hundred times but faster - or something quite the opposite like a wobbler? I think we actually had a shot at one biggie that tried to eat a Grinder as my non-watching non-figur8-ing non-musky loving brother pulled the lure from the water only to be splashed by the tail as it swirled boatside. I'm sure this public recognition will only further his opinion on my journy to musky snobbery!
JRedig
Trigger before boatside so there's no need for a figure 8! A bit tongue in cheek, but not completely either...
BoxMN
Ha! I have to go back to my Harley Riding neighbors for less snobbery But yep, I wasn't watching, and more cursing the weeds, or I would have seen that girl chasing sooner. My bad, heh She actually nipped at it right when I was starting to pull it out of water, but before my hands could catch up with my eyes. Granted he did put me in the middle of the boat in bad figure-8ing position, with my Grandson playing "how much can I backlash" in the stern of the boat! ha! 50inchpig
IMO there's always room, might not be a good loop or figure 8 but if you're using a grinder you should be able to steer it through and around the longer weeds. if it's not too thick to fish it's not too thick to keep it moving in some shape or form at boatside. box bros - nobody has probably ever told you this before but your rods might be too long, you may not be able to move your hands and get it turned and keep your bait moving in that top couple inches of water without digging down in the weeds. maybe you should break those dusty 7 footers out for your slopwork.
