Calico Beans

Recommended Posts

SurfaceTension like the beans so much that he asked if I would post the recipe and because I am not one of THOSE PEOPLE that think they need to keep a good recipe a secret so they are the only one that can cook it. Sorry about the rant but my sister-in-law is one of them and it REALLY made me mad when she would not share her fruit pizza recipe. Her exact words were that I could have it when she was dead.

Calico Beans

Brown: 1/2 lb hamburger

1/2lb bacon,cooked,cut into small pieces

Add 1 cup onion, cut fine; cook slightly

Add 1/2 cup ketchup

1 tsp salt

1 tsp mustard

2 Tbsp vinegar

3/4 cup brown sugar

Add:

1 can pork & beans

1 can kidney beans

1 can lima OR butter beans

Do not drain any of the beans and use 16 oz cans.

Mix and bake 40-50 minutes at 350 degrees, uncoverd

Serves 10-12

Here is what I do a little different:

I always make a double batch and cook it in the crock pot on high for 6-8 hours.

I use 1.25lbs of Midwest Pride bacon that I bake in the oven and then dry all the grease off before cutting into pieces.

I like to use Bush's regular pork and beans.

I use Plochman,s mustard and I don't measure but give it 2 good squirts

If you don't cook it enough it will be too runny so make sure to stir it every now and then and when you take the top off the crock pot get rid of the moisture on the lid or cook with the top off.

Normally they will not burn to the bottom in a crock pot but because I wanted to heat them all day I put the crock on the fish house heater and thought I had it low enough but it burnt them on the bottom and are they ever tough to clean then cry

Filled it with water and slow cooked and still had to chip off the beans off the bottom crazy

    • Yeah it was a beatdown
    • Your kid needs to stay with him!👍
    • My kid was eating in Beverly Hills and ran into this guy. Talked to him a bit and wished him luck in the game tonight.
    • 🤔as a recovering machinist!🤣🤣that must make me a recovering welder!
    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
