Another good night!

Recommended Posts

Mitch and I headed out last night after midnight and decided to go after a few more fox even though the moon was out as we didn't have enough snow for good spotting on our coyote farms.

1st Set: We set up on the North edge of a narrow finger of pines with a large pine grove to the West and a small field and more pines to the East. Mits on the West side and I'm on the East. Start the caller and 2 minutes in we see one come out on Mits side so we hit the lights and he proceeds East in front of us, out of range, into the East woods, heads South and crosses back to the West behind us. We lose him and 2 minutes later he pops out in front agian but jumps back into the woods and starts heading South. I figure he's going to cross back on the trail he came in on so I scoot down a little closer and here he come and then down he went. Nice young male.

2nd Set: Nothing

3rd Set: Nothing

4th Set: We set up on a North and South trail next to a power pole. Standing literally elbow to elbow. Thick grass and brush to the West and a field to the East and thick pines North of that. Two years ago on two different hunts I had them come barreling down the trail from the North and stop 20 yards from me. Mits on my right watching down the trail. I start the caller and 1 minute later I here something running through the grass behind us. I slowly turn and it's 10 feet away. It turns to run and I finally see it after it gets out of the grass at 20 yards and turns broadside in the brush. I take the shot. Big male down.

5th Set: We set up at the intersection of three trails in some thick nasty stuff. Mits North of me covering the North and East trails and I'm behind him watching the West. I start the caller and immediately I see Mits gun come up and his light go on. Apparently the fox came out on the trail and stood broadside but must have seen him and ran into the brush as soon as Mit was raising his gun for the shot. I keep the caller going for another 5 minutes but never see the fox. Mitch says it was a good night but I wish he would have had a shot at one of them tonight. Maybe next week.

Im pretty sure those are red fox, but I could be just as wrong as I think you are!

Well, I guess we'll just have to wait for the OP (Grayfox) to check back and clears this up for us. I too, say with 100% certainty, these are Gray Fox in the photos. wink

Yes,they're grays. Black stripe running full length of the tail and not the white tip. I think they're a lot better looking than the reds(a lot more color, black, gray, white, orange) and you don't have to worry about them having mange. Never seen a bad one yet.

The light we use for identifying are the optronics 100 yard models, sit tight to barrel and seem to hold up well. I think Primos has there name on them now.

Good to here from you Vance, been a long time. Mitch and I are coming over this weekend to do some muzzleloader hunting as well and then we're off to Missouri next Friday for a few days of muzzleloader hunting down there. Good luck this weekend and tell Tim I said hi.

    • Your kid needs to stay with him!👍
    • My kid was eating in Beverly Hills and ran into this guy. Talked to him a bit and wished him luck in the game tonight.
    • 🤔as a recovering machinist!🤣🤣that must make me a recovering welder!
    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
