VMS
Hi Everyone,In my learning process of this new little hobby of mine, I made a mistake when gluing up my cork rings. The Butt end of the cork rings got some glue on it and as I took the rod out of the press, some small chunks of cork stayed with the press. I have not put on the butt-cap yet because I use a threaded rod and a well nut to attach the rod to my drill for turning the cork.So...now I'm in a small jam. When I go to attach the butt cap (burl cork) it will not be flush with those spots that broke off. I figure I have two choices: High speed cutter to flush up the end of the rod again (would have to take off 1/8") or some sort of filler...Suggestions?Thanks!!Steve
Mike Wallace
Steve,We took the same class from Gary a few years ago.If the 1/8" is critical, then use some of the cork you sand off, combine it with wood glue, and fill the holes. If the 1/8" isn't critical, cut it off.Good Luck
A.W.Wolfram
I would trim the cork with a sharp single sided razor blade. Then if you need to trim the blank I use a hack saw blade held by hand. If you are doing a flush cap, back cut the blank so if it protrudes it will not hold your cap off causing a gap.
Willow Sticks
Also consider golden oak wood filler, color is usually very close and it is sandable when done.
