That isn't a stupid question! We all need to learn it once in our lives. You'll be surprised how many people didn't know that...or what backwaters, breakwaters, headwaters, seams...etc. are. You pick things up as you fish and learn! grin.gif

Now that you understand that, we can go on to the next lesson. Understanding current flow in tidal rivers grin.gif

The current and resulting eddies change direction 4 times a day in tidal rivers. The amount of change and times the tides change differs each day due to moon phase. The effects on your fishing are influenced by distance to the ocean and original river flow from run off.

So far I have figured out how to tell which way the water is flowing. I have a bunch of charts telling me tide change and approximate times the effect will reach the portion of river I am fishing but it takes to much time to read it all and I just look at flow and position on the correct side of structure. crazy.gif

I have learned that feeder creeks often have a shallow bar at their mouths at the river. If you can get your boat over at high tide you may have to wait for another high tide to get out! grin.gif

This shouldn't be a problem in Minnesota but keep it in mind if you fish the James river-Pee Dee-Lower Cape Fear rivers grin.gif

Ohhhh... the challenges that face us catfisherman. My brain hurts just thinking about that one.

I would love to fish the James someday, more than likely with a good guide though.
