Mid-Life Crisis

Recommended Posts

Ever go through a mid-life crisis where you just need a change? Well I’ve been cheating on my ol’ partner of 12 years. I kind’a feel bad. I haven’t ‘gone all the way yet’ with my new found love, but I know the day is drawing near. I’ve been checking her out for the last couple months on the internet… She goes by the name LX-5. Man is she sweet to look at and sounds like a complete package too!

Boy the promises she’s been making! A lot more power than I’m used to, no more ‘freezing up’ at the most inopportune times, and the promise of being quieter than I’ve ever experienced with my old gal. Plus, she promised she will be able to see more than all the rest of them out there……. No matter how small it is. All in this sleek little red-headed package with just the right amount of padding where it’s needed. Velcro to take her top off quickly and she’s constantly mesmerizing me with the brightest colors I’ve ever seen on anyone’s face! Plus I can always tell in an instant, if she has enough juice left inside of her to satisfy me with just a quick peek to her backside.

Don’t get me wrong… My old gal is nice… she’s an ’18, goes about her work methodically, not a bad package… maybe a little taller than I like, but all in all not terrible. She does have a couple quirks that I’ve never been able to figure out though… whenever I turn her on, she just sits and wheezes the whole time I’m using her, and just when I really need her the most… she’ll freeze up! I end up giving her a whack up side her head to get her going again… I guess I just started realizing, that this is no way to treat someone you are relying on for your pleasure! Plus she will not give in at all! She always needs to be locked onto the bottom! I’d like to experiment a little, maybe have her try in the middle, or heck, go all the way up to the top, but she refuses every time I even think about it and I end up just switching her back to her normal mode on those occasions. Often I like to start in one spot and maybe move to another, but every time I do this, I have to start all over with her. That can get tiring after a couple times each evening, and to top it off she’s really vague about how much she’s got left in her. She tries to tell me, but I can never get a real accurate reading on where she’s at.

I’ve been feeling really low about all my cheating. On the web late at night, reading the reviews on LX-5, even looking at the pictures and dreaming about how one day we will be together. Well I had enough dreaming! I plunked down my money and I got her last week! She’s everything I imagined. My new gal is sitting there waiting patiently for me. She knows it’s just a matter of time until we ‘hook up’, but she also knows I like to take my time and wait until everything is just right. I also felt I needed to do a little bird hunting first, and then it’ll be game on later in December! I explained I needed to do this full throttle…it’s all or nothing! And guess what? She understands! I promised to get her out in the Metro within a couple weeks and then we would start our ‘up north rendezvous’’.

I was out in the shop the other day and looked up and there sat my ol’ gal… I realized at that moment that I’ve neglected her for the last couple of months. Haven’t given her a cleaning or did anything to charge her batteries since summer, well I took her down, charged her back up and tried to turn her on, but she just started in with that same ol’ incessant wheezing and I ended up putting her back to bed. I went over to my new ‘red head’ and after turning her on, she just quietly sat there waiting to see what she should do next. She was teasing me and I was teasing her… a little kindling for the fire for both of us. I tucked her in and went back in the house dreaming about the 1st day that we get to go all out! I know what she can do and can’t wait to use it!

So ol’ man winter, if you are reading this, do me a favor and blow some cold winds across those lakes. Me and my new Marcum LX-5 have a date with destiny! For those of you that are/were in the same rut as me, look into the Marcum products, I know that you will not be disappointed and they will satisfy all your needs!

Good luck!

Ken

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
