voltage regulator

Question

When hooking up my batteries i touched the wires on the battery wrong and there was an arch which blew a fuse on my tilt trim know i'm thinking my cranking battery isn;t getting charged could i have blew my voltage regulater this is on an yamaha 200 motor if so how do i check this???

With the engine running use a volt meter to check the voltage at the battery. Anything 0ver 13 volts (preferably 13.5 to 14.5) and its working. 12.8 or less and its not. A fully charged battery would have around 12.6 - 12.8 volts by itself.

I haven't got a change to check voltage yet but always thinking the worse when it comes to boat problems is the voltage regulator something thats easy to replace or is it something that has to go to the dealer and sit there for two weeks waiting to be fixed

Though I've never opened up a newer Yamaha, it shouldn't be that difficult. On many of the older motors it was simply a couple screws and a plug in. With all of the electronics on them now, finding it will be your biggest challenge. But first make sure thats the problem.
