ATV discs

Does anyone (BLB?) know of any of the ATV discs that do a good job? Even in heavy soil?

We bought one from Fleet Farm and "modified" it to hold up to about 200 extra lbs. It tore up Northhome area soil pretty well (after we got all the trees/roots out of there).

I have the King Kutter dual gang from Fleet. It was $450 I believe.

We do as JB mentions with adding weight.

Without any weight on it, all its good for is churning a soft garden up. With the added weight it becomes a very good unit!

There are several brands out there, but the King Kutter is pretty affordable for the average Joe. If you have cash to burn you can go with the Biologic one(around $679), Summit Mule($850), and on down the line. There are lots of them out there.

When you say "heavy soil" are you talking clay?

I have a worksaver flip over, built a wood platform for it to hold extra weight (bags of pulverized lime). Works good, takes a few passes in hard dry soil or in roots but gets the job done and has lasted for several years already.

I dont know if I would describe it as clay, but it is pretty hard to work. It is heavy black soil. Prolly some clay in it, but not entirely clay. I am scared that I will go buy one and it will barely scratch the surface.

Can they get through grass? Do you have to mow the grass first? Spray it?

We were lucky and had a friends CAT available. He lowered the bucket and took everything out down to the dirt. We had to go out and pull all the saplings by hand. Then we disc'd the soil.

we also have the king kutter. It is good for small plots 1/4 to 1/2 acer but we did add wight to it about 300 lbs.we leave it in the woods so we painted it camo to cover that yellow up. out of sight out of mind

You shouldn't have to mow the grass, the disc will take care of that. Just keep going over and over it.

Mowing it will require needing to go over and over and over a few less times. Mow/weed whip it if you can. If you can't plan on some extra time needed to get the job done.
