kb1965
I have a 86 smokercraft, aluminum boat, that is red and silver. The red paint is really faded. Is there anything out there that I can use to bring back the color, besides repainting?Kevin
montanagriz
Hey Kevin,Try using some Nu-Finish on it. It comes in a bright orange bottle. My brother and I use it on my Grandpa's red '85 Lund Predator every spring and it brings back the color quite nicely. Obviously depending on the amount of sun damage, it's not going to work miracles, but I've definately seen noticeable results by using it. Good luck, let us know how it turns out. Random guy
Start off trying a very mild or fine rubbing compound. Try it in a hidden spot first to make sure it isn't to agressive. This will lift the oxidated paint off and smooth out the what good paint is left. Now re-wash the boat then hit it with a wax. Be prepaired to use some elbows for this project, you should look like Popeye when you are done.

kdawg
John is right, the rubbing compound is the way to go. I would recommend getting a circular buffer. With this you definately want to start out in a more inconspicous spot until you get used to the buffer. Do NOT buff on any area that has a "lip" or ridge - only on flat surfaces. If you go over a lip with a buffer it can take it down to metal. I used to recondition cars for a auto dealer. It was very common to take a "used" car in on trade, buff it out, wax it and detail the interior and sell it for thousands more than it would have otherwise. I've seen ugly paint turn into pretty paint using this method, but if you do it by hand, it will take forever and a day. Don't forget to wax it afterwards. Good luck.
