reel for kids

the Linders had a great idea when they introducted the idea of Heavy action spinning rods, they brought the idea to shimano. shimano introduced a line of Compre Musky Spinning rods and they have a number of 3000 and 4000 series reels that work great for that application, as well as being great for soft plastic and small to medium high speed bucktails. Just a thought, Jonah

P.S. no backlashes and a fun reel when your forearms get tired from jerkbaits.

I don't think it's the reel as much as the lures that they throw while they are learning.

I am teaching my daughter this summer. I am rigging her up with a Garcia 5600 (I like the thumbbar) and a 7.5 foot flippin stick. I will start her off with bucktails and rattle baits.

One of the keys to good casting is getting the line back on the reel tight, so for the 1st hour or so, I will probably have her throw Eagle tails or something else with a bigger blade. If it pulls hard, the line will go on tight and there will be fewer backlashes.

Will probably spend some time over rock bars throwing deep crankbaits.

My plan is to cast for muskies for a bit, then work the same piece of stucture for bass. Might work on flippin also, we'll see.

The side benefit is that she will also learn a bunch more about structure and hopefully boat control.

One other thing....

Before I hand her the rig in the boat, we're going to spend a Saturday at a local football field. A couple of friend's and I are curious about how far we can really cast, we'll find out at the football field. Anyways, I figure that will also be a great place for Brianna to get her first few casts in. No pressure and if she backlashes, picking it out won't cost any fishing time.

My wife picked up the Cabela's Musky spinning rod and paired it with a larger Shimano Spirex (rear drag). Although it's not my cup of tea it works well for pike and can throw larger lures. Since my kids (7&8) are quite comfortable with spinning gear they borrow that rig when they feel like tossing larger bait. My daughter caught a 30" Pike on it which was rather entertaining.
