Eagle Lake, ON

Recommended Posts

I've read quite a bit about this lake and how it is a fabulous musky fishery. I had the opprotunity to fish it last August for the first time. Both my buddy and I were rookies to the lake and had no success. Follows by small fish, but no hook-ups and no follows to make note of. We tried lots of different presentations (speed, slow, plastics, bucktails, jerkbaits, trolling, etc...) with no success. We focused most of our attention to weeds, but I am thinking that rocky main-lake points were the way to go at that time of year... unfortunately time ran out before I could test my theory. It's been bugging me ever since and I was wondering if I could strike up a little discussion about Eagle Lake with any of you who have fished it and had success. What time of year was it and what patterns were working for you? Any good stories from this massive body of water?

Since we can't satisfy our musky-jones by fishing we might as well do our best by talking about it.

fish!?... nope, just weeds.

Ha, your asking the WRONG guy here, because I am not a fan of Eagle Lake at all. I frequently visit the Vermilion Bay area, and a few of the locals refer to it as the "Dead Sea" I will say this, your theory is right. Eagle can be tough in general, but trying to find Muskies in the weeds in August is even harder. Your right about the main lake points, but the best spots are the little ones...The pocket of tiny weeds in front of a rock, or the patch of High Grass at the fringe of the Island.Avoiding the temptations of the vast large weedbed is key. A lot of spots on Eagle you cant see on a map but rather with your own eyes while you are cruising around.

Eagle is a fantastic TROPHY musky fishery, but as for numbers it is not. If you would have driven up the road from Eagle about 10 minutes to some of the other lakes, you would never want to fish Eagle again. I know on a few of the lakes I frequent Andy Meyers Lodge brings multiple boats out there a day, which tells me a lot of his clients are struggling on actually Eagle Lake. But that's just my 2 cents, I only go out there in late fall in hopes of giant 50+ inch fish, besides that there's far better water in Canada

Thanks for your insight Brian. What are some of your favorite bodies of water in that area and places to stay? I know you've mentioned Lac Suel, Wabigoon, and Crow Lake in other posts.

Right by Eagle Lake you have Canyon Lake (it doesnt get much better then that), The Indian chain of Lakes, The Cliff Lake Lake System up on Red lake Road, Lake Of the Woods to name a few are my favorites, any of these Lakes put Eagle to Shame from my experiences, unless you are searching for that one monster fish of a lifetime!

    • Yeah it was a beatdown
    • Your kid needs to stay with him!👍
    • My kid was eating in Beverly Hills and ran into this guy. Talked to him a bit and wished him luck in the game tonight.
    • 🤔as a recovering machinist!🤣🤣that must make me a recovering welder!
    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
