Fun in the sun with Jeff and the Scenic Tackle Crew!

Recommended Posts

Just returned from way too short of a trip up to the English River system. I met up with Jeff Beckwith and 7 other guys from Scenic Tackle. What a blast!

Great times having some of the best fish I've ever tasted. Jeff made some fishballs, and they were phenomenal! Good times sitting around into the evening.

Early morning wake up call and we were out fishing by 7:00. I had a great time. We were able to get into the walleyes right away, using some of Scenic's finest, Angel Eye jigs.

We fished from 7-10 yesterday morning and caught fish slowly and steadily for those three hours. Some of the ones pictured are 22-23 inchers and there were several caught and released, as well as keeping a couple so I can try and duplicate those fishballs (tonight)

A big thanks to Jeff and the boys for their hospitality and letting in an outsider to their annual trip. smile.gifwink.gif It was too short, but it was a blast. I hope you guys enjoyed the rest of your stay.

The trip was a blast as always. Glad you could join in on the fun Hemlock!!

My boat spent most of our time searching for pike and smallies - we did get some nice fish - 18" smallie, many pike in the 30"+ range - I bet we boated well over 100 pike! And a 26" walleye caught on a spinner bait was fun!

I was impressed with the new Gulp line of plastics. Seems those out performed live bait at times - other times live bait was the way to go... depends on the day. But we didn't have many problems catching enough eyes to keep our attention span... What an incredible fishery!!

Hemlock,

Glad you could make it out. The entire trip was a blast. We returned to that same area later in the day and caught a bunch more of them football style walleyes. Later that day we hit a few more spots and did well there also. With the water as high as it was this year the fishing was a bit tougher inregards to locating the fish but I think these fish were healthier and weighed in higher because of the high concentration of food supply. It was also real interesting to see the teeth marks on some of them larger eyes from something real BIG.

The Angel Eye Jigs did very well for us up there this year. That narrow head design allowed us to use smaller sized jigs in the current. For some reason these fish seemed to be pretty color “fussy” this year more then most. Seemed that if you were not catching them on one color just change colors and you were right back into them.

Hey Jeff,

Sounds like another sucessful trip on the English. I would agree with you on the color specific thing. We found that plain green worked the best for us. At times it was a huge difference. I had a crawler harness with a green hook on the front. 19 out of 20 fish were hooked on that green hook. I would have to say that is not coincedence. Our average size was down a bit this year, but as I mentioned in a previous post, we battled 2 days of wind and couldn't fish some of our better spots. Glad to hear you had a good trip, maybe see you up at LOW this winter.

    • Yeah it was a beatdown
    • Your kid needs to stay with him!👍
    • My kid was eating in Beverly Hills and ran into this guy. Talked to him a bit and wished him luck in the game tonight.
    • 🤔as a recovering machinist!🤣🤣that must make me a recovering welder!
    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
