Sorry Airjer, I stole your line!

I recently added a 2003 F150 to my fleet. I decided to put the same Pioneer deck that I had in my '85 F150 and both of my Rangers into the 2003 F150. Everything went smooth until I decided to turn on the headlights. Pop. I blew the 5amp fuse for the dashlights. I put on my sleuth hat and decided to reinstall the factory stereo and bingo, no fuse blowouts.

My Pioneer has a Ford wiring harness adapter that connects to the factory harness in the F150. I noticed that there are two plugs that go to the factory deck but the Pioneer adapter only connects to one of them. Could the problem lie in the unconnected radio plug? I went online and read that other Pioneer owners had problems with the orange wire for the dimmer. I'm not sure what to do differently with that wire. It's also interesting that this 2003 Ford would require me to do something different than the 1985, 2006, and 2007 Fords that I had this same deck installed into.

So any thoughts on what is causing the fuse to blow? Remedies?

The light blue and black wire use to be for the dash lights. I am not sure if it still is. People would use it for a ground when installing radios and when you turned on your lights the dash light fuse would blow. They may have switch the wires in the connector.

Well, I'm not sure which remedy cured the problem but I did two things last night:

- Capped both the orange and orange/black wires coming out of the Pioneer harness. They had nowhere to go on the Ford harness. Previously I just left them as they came, with the tiny insulation "cap" left on the ends. Now they're both capped

- The black ground wire on the Pioneer harness connects to the black ground wire in the Ford harness and is ground (somewhere) to the chassis. However, there was another unused black ground called "Amp Ground" that I've never needed to use before. I extended that wire and alligator clipped it to the chassis in back.

One of those two things fixed the problem. I'm no longer blowing dash fuses.

    • Yeah it was a beatdown
    • Your kid needs to stay with him!👍
    • My kid was eating in Beverly Hills and ran into this guy. Talked to him a bit and wished him luck in the game tonight.
    • 🤔as a recovering machinist!🤣🤣that must make me a recovering welder!
    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
