12v Battery Inquiry

The problem with buying batteries online is you have to pay for shipping. As we all know, batteries are not light. I would (and will since I need a new battery) check out Gander if they are really only $25 for a 9ah. That is a very fair deal. Thanks for the tip Ed!

Problem is it's hard to find them with chargers anymore. Batteries plus still did last year but i haven't looked this year yet. I know most people have a few laying around and i have atleast 5 myself, however, i find myself charging all of my batteries at the same time a lot especially if i am going on a fishing trip some where. Plus i like to have one or two with my fishing stuff just in case. The more batteries you have the more chargers you need. I think this my fall into my fishing equipment purchasing addiction. grin Can't seem to ever have enough stuff.

Good to see Ed. How many batteries can you charge at one time with the maintainer. How would you hook them up to charge more than one at a time if possible?

Been looking at getting a maintainer but have too many batteries to keep charged all the time. I have a tendancy to plug them in and forget about them for a couple days. Sick of wrecking batteries this way. Would like to hook up the maintainer and keep them full at all times so that when i am ready to go i can grab a couple fully charged baterries and go. Always charge them when i get home from using.

Might have to swing in to gander later and take a look at this package. Haven't been in there in a few days so its time. cool

Ahhhh..ummmm....not sure?. Should work, if your talking a "Sportsman's" type battery. I know guys that do use them on boats in storage.

If you have a series rig hooked up, it should do it if wired properly.

The V-400 is a heavy duty smart charger. Hook them up and walk away, they float in and out of maintance mode as required. Good for ATV's, Snow Blowers, even a seldom used car..ect...a good maintenance system for 12V.

I do 1 battery at a time, but multiple batteries might work fine too? Charge time for deeply discharged batteries would vary significantly with multiple batteries I would suspect.

I keep a V-400 in my rig all the time, as it is so versatile.

Thinking more for just my Vex batteries. Soon to be three or four flashers in the household. A couple for lighting in the portables and maybe the hard house. Gets to be a lot of batteries to charge after each outing. But still cheaper and easier than the car battery i was dragging around each time out.

Just trying to figure out if i can charge them all at once with one maintainer or still should charge them individually. Would be easier with the maintainer for those times i forgot i plugged them in. Of course if i could just fish every day that would never be a problem. Kids and work seem to get in the way a lot.

Still pushing for a 2 day work week and 5 day weekend but my bosses don't like the idea for some reason crazy

I use a BatteryMinder for my 12V batteries, and rigged up a harness so I can maintain the charge on 4 batteries at once. Works great for me.

I also just got a couple of these to replace some aging batteries. Better than most due to being deep cycle & AGM (not gel) batteries.

    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
