Been out to Grindstone and I got the big goose egg so far this year. Every time I went last year I did well for Rainbows, Browns , and Lakers. On the other hand my wife has done pretty well this year for rainbows. Anybody have any luck on Square this year?

Square has been slow this year. I've got 4 in 5 trips, all 13" - 15". A good friend has been there 6 or 8 times and only scored 1 fish. For what it's worth, the fish I've got have been in about 10'.

Donbo-

What's your take on Square being slow this year? My group has been out 3-4 times this year with no fish. We aren't even seeing many. Fishing in 6-20 feet.

Last year we'd hit square at lunchtime, get our 2, and leave to go crappie fishing elsewhere. This was also later in the year towards the end of February. Even on slow days we saw plenty of fish.

I can understand not catching, but the not seeing is confusing me. Are they deeper? Staying in different parts of the lake? Less fish?

I don't have a theory. Anyone?

I have no clue. I have only seen maybe 2 fish that I didn't catch...As this is my first year ice-fishing it I can only go by what others say. Fish 10' and under, bla, bla, bla. Maybe they are deeper for some reason, I haven't tried anywhere other the so called prime areas near the beach.

I know the fish are in there, I did real good there this summer right up till the season closed.

As it is, I guess I'll keep targeting crappies elswhere as long as that bite holds up.

Anyone else figures them out, please give us a tip.

i have been on square about a dozen times this year the catch has been fair, nowhere as good as last year comparing numbers and size. This year they seem to be in deeper water suspended anywhere from 5 to 20ft in the water column. Try fishing right below the ice, if you don't have any hits move deeper, and try to keep your jig perfectly still, the slightest movement will scare them away. good luck!

Thanks for your input, and welcome to FM!

How deep of water have you been finding them in?

If you see the truck / shack in my avitar on the ice, stop and say Hi!

30-35 FOW seems to be the ticket right below the ice, dont use a float and sight fish them so you dont have to move your jig until you set the hook when its in thier mouth. also i use two lines one with flourocarbon and the other with reg. mono and i catch 95% of them on the fluorocarbon. i'll be out there saturday, youll probably see me an a red park ave. with a rack for my shack.

BRULEWADER, I saw you this morning. You just turned north on 15 from 36. I was headed to the St. Croix. Didn't do so good. Should I have gone to Square instead?

    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
    • I went ahead and watched some of the MLF coverage.  Wheeler didn’t make the cut but the bigger story was the Poche/Avera fallout.   Kinda funny listening to both sides of the story and putting together the scenario, reading between the lines.
