English River Reports?

Recommended Posts

I was up in that area yesterday but did not even drop a line in the water. It just about killed me not to fish this trip. But heading up in a couple weeks again.

Water levels look to be low in most places that I seen.

grin.gifgrin.gif I'm still laughing at you Jeff....all this way up here and not even wetting a line. Must've been tough...I don't know how you passed up the temptation to put that boat in at Kenora, Sioux Narrows, Nestor Falls, Rainy River....Have you splashed it down there yet?

I tell ya it just about nearly killed me not to be able to fish up there this trip. I am driving down the road pulling a boat, IN Canada, and not stopping to fish. I am heading straight home. The only thing that made if even close to easier was looking at the white caps out there that day. But that did not even make it that much easier. Then the kid saying, "Dad, that lake is not to bad" really did not help much either. lol.

Oh well….be back up there Aug 11. AND I WILL FISH THEN!!

Came back last friday from a weeks stay.(June 30th thru July 7th) We stayed on North Indian Island. Did most of our fishing in Ball lake. Not much for big fish out of our group of 8. Largest was a 42" and a 40" pike, a lot of pike in the 36" to 30" all released. We found the walleyes to be mixed in with the pike. Were we have caught numbers of fish in the past there just was nothing happening in those locations. The water is low..... The cabbage weeds seemed to be just starting to grow in the bays. Hope this has helped...... crazy.gif

Got back last night from our 4 day trip. This year we were 2-3 weeks earlier than our normal time in early August. The first day, after setting up camp, we went to some of our "usual" spots to get some fish for dinner. Didn't have any problem finding dinner fish, but we were not catching any larger fish.

The next day we made our way up the river. Again, hitting our usual honey holes. And again, finding fish but not the size we were looking for. That afternoon tried a sandbar and started seeing some bigger fish. From then on we left the shorelines and points alone and fished mid-lake humps. From then on we were catching the fish we came to catch.

We fished one particular hump for about 1 1/2 hrs. With 3 of us in the boat we had 1 triple, 10 doubles, and many single fish catches. That was the craziest fishing I've had in 3 years of going up there. What a blast!

We ended up catching and releasing 3 @ 25", 2 @ 24", and many many in that 21-23" range.

On a side note, we caught more smaller fish this year than we've ever seen. We have one guy in our party who has been going up here for over 17 years now. So, we were glad to see the fish population looking good for the future.

We also caught 7 different species of fish this year, another first for our party. Walleye, sauger, perch, northern, white fish, small mouth, and a rock bass on a spinner and a leech, go figure!

We'll be up on the English Aug. 5-12 in at the Manitou Falls camp. Anyone been fishing up that far? How's the fishing? I read the water levels are down. Anybody track how far down? Is the current running fast? (need to know what size jig heads to invest in).

This is from someone that was just up at Seperation Lake. We will be heading up next week. Hope this helps everyone. "Got back Sunday morning after one week at Separation Rapids campground and one week near Blackduck MN so my information is a week old.

Water level is down 7 feet from the last two years. It was the lowest that I have seen in the last six years that I have been going.

That said, you can still travel the rapids below the camp. Fishing was good but not what I would call fantastic except for smallmouth was the best I have ever seen.

Best walleye was 26" but caught lots of 22" fish. Went to Lount lake one day and did very well. Also down to Kettle Falls twice, also did well.

Know where you are going though as two lower units were destroyed while I was there. I also have a new nick in mine.

I don't think water level is affecting the quanity or size of the fish but some people were struggling as they did not adjust the locations as perhaps the fish might have moved from when water was high last year."
