Suggestions for hand held GPS with mapping

fisher_king2004

Question

My old Lowrance H2O finally died and I am wondering what would be a good replacement. I use it ice fishing and therefore would like a lake map chip that would work in it. I also hook it onto my ATV when I go into the woods hunting. I don't think you can get a lakemaster chip for any handheld unit now.

Any suggestions?

I have the Garmin 62S with the Upper Midwest Fishing Guide chip and am very pleased with both. Just bought the chip this year but have had the 62S for 3 years now. Used it mainly for the deer stands hunting in SE MN bluff country. No problem picking up a satellite location.

When I was looking at a new GPS a while back (never did pull the trigger on any new one), I had pretty much settled on the Garmin Montana because it seemed to cover most bases.

Works in car with routing, works on motorcycle (et al) with routing and custom routes, takes topo and lake maps, can get model with built in camera, etc.

If it is not getting a location pick up anymore try this. Go to the GPS setup window and make sure DGPS Required is on or has an X in it. X out of that and see if it will pick up a location again? I have two older ones that I thought were shot and one day out in the boat playing with it I tried clicking that off and it found my location right away. When I clicked it back on I would lose my location again right away. I tied this same thing on both of them and they both work better now. wink

I'm not a huge fan of the touch screens, although they are pretty slick.

If you have gloves on that touch screen probably isn't going to work too well.

I have a Garmin 60Cx (the 62 series is the updated model) and I can one hand it with an ice armor mitten on and work the controls with my thumb.

Just something to think about.
