Surface Jake???

Can I grind down the lip on my 8" Jake and make it a surface/sub-surface bait? If I grind down the lip to the nubbins, will it ride just below or even on top of the surface?

You spent the $13 for the lure, you can do anything you want to it. ;-)

Seriously though -- I have shortened the lips on many of my crank baits, some on purpose some on rocks. I have done it with the Jake, DDD, Ernie, Grandma and others, just make sure you make a straight cut and keep the lip squared off. Don't take the lip off a Jake -- with the low line attachment, you need some lip to keep it swimming. Keep about 1/2 to 3/4 inch below the bait and she will run down about a foot or less, and still maintain some good action.

Good Luck -- Lure modification is real fun, you will ruin a few baits, but some of the ones that turn out, will have an action like nothing else on the market. That can give you an edge on those pressured waters.
