Prop Topwater Baits

Recommended Posts

Anyone here ever build any prop topwater baits? I am in process of building some muskie sized ones out right now and have a couple questions. I'm using poplar wood, should I be adding any weight to these? If so where? I have an 8in, 7in and 6in. Rear prop, front prop and front globe styles. Also, does the wood where the prop goes have to be in the center in order for it to turn well? Some of them are off by an 1/8in or so and would appear to wobble.

Disclaimer: I have not built a topwater prop bait. Personally I would at the least experiment with weighting them - cast better, move more water, better hookups, prevent rolling. You just don't want them sinking on you, try taping some weight to them in various amounts and places on the lure and see how they sit in the water. Should get you in the ball park.

A little wobble can be a good thing on a prop bait!

Just my .02 worth.
