Boat Motor Rating

So my boat is rated for a 75HP motor. Right now I have 1995 75HP Mercury on it. It has been kind of a pain and I think I am going to have to replace the stator system in it this spring if I decide to keep it. Is it worth keeping it, or shopping around for a used one? If shopping...where is a good place to start. Last summer, a marina had a 2003 90HP Mercury. Can I put that motor on my boat if it is rated at a 75HP? I have a 17.5 ft Warrior Fiberglass, so there is alot of weight.

Physically, yes you can. Legally and safely, no you cannot.

A boat mechanic won't even touch it if he see's the rating plate, and he will always look for the rating.

Not recomended to go over the rated HP. Also be aware you can get ticketed for it and in the case of an accident your insurance may deny your claim due to being over the rated HP.

That is kind of what I thought...does anyone have any thoughts on a good place to look for some used motors?? Not really in the market for a new one, although I wish I was...

I use the list created by craig. Lots of good choices on there. Just make sure you run the motor with muffs before you buy it, some shady people out there.
