Loon and Muskie encounter on Friday

On Friday while fishing on a local lake we had a young loon harrass our live bait presentations. It would swim under the boat past the bait and then surface and act goofy. We decided to move so when were reeling up and put the bait in the boat I looked back and notice a muskie followed up near the boat so I put my bait back in the water. When the loon saw me put the bait back in the water it came back for a look and I could not believe what I saw....

It chased that muskie around the boat and then they both went out of sight. A moment later the loon surfaced and did a victory dance on the water.

It was sure something to see.

We should keep trolls out of fun threads that celebrate wildlife and nature.

Musta been pretty neat to see a loon chasing a 'ski! Earlier this year I had a loon keep swimming by my canoe in murky water and surfacing far enough away I didn't associate the two, it took me like a half hour to figure out what the heck this weird shape swimming all around me was.

I have had loons swim under the boat before, but this one would dance on the water when it surfaced and poke its head under the water a bunch of times like it was trying to pick something up, and then would dive again and come back under the boat past the sucker.

I would not have believed that a loon would chase off a mid-40's muskie if I would not have seen it with my own eyes.

The loon did look big itself under water. At first sight I thought I saw a snapping turtle.

It was a neat experience and a nice day on the water.
