  1. Does that mean I can still harvest trout throughout Sunday 9/14 until 11 PM? Because the trout catch-n-release start date is Monday 9/15 and not 9/14. Or does it mean trout harvesting ends 9/13 at 11:00:00 PM (legal trout fishing time limit the day before 9/14)?
  2. it's a sad day when research must be done to find bullheads. Centennial Lake in Edina is home to many and big bullheads.
  3. someone has to do it: I harvest my fair share of fish but which sportsman would harvest an 18" crappie? That's not even state-record type stuff, that's worldly. Replica mounts are as good as the real thing if mounting is the reason.
  4. ......in the product's defense, it was user error: I set the auger down while it was running and the slow rotation of the blades caused it to tip over while running and it cut itself off soon after. now in my defense, I did say this was my first ever gas auger!!!! =P It's a new SM 2HP Solo.
  5. 1st time gas-auger owner. I encountered the dreaded "flooded engine" while on a fishing trip (my whole trip would have been ruined but I got some guys nearby to drill me holes!) This was my first time ever so I almost refunded my product out of frustration. I was able to fire it up following the StrikeMaster manual (take plug out, pull the recoil several times with full throttle on) My question is: is flooding a regular occurence? How bad is it for the engine or spark plug? Should I always have a wrench with me then in case I need to clear the chamber on the lake?
  6. live minnows with bare hook or a demon-type jighead. The way nature intended. if you don't want a big fathead minnow, i don't want you.
  7. I am thinking of using my near-$200 Shimano Stradic 1000-size as an ice reel. It's just a tad bigger than I'd like for my panfish noodle rods.
  8. I drive a Toyota, actually two Toyotas. I'm also Azian, happy now? I also have a Fisheries & Wildlife degree and am a lifelong environmentalist. I'm currently in a career in the environmental field. You stopped short of saying Azianz are stealing all your fish but your word choice and tone are pretty suggestive of that. Why not just say "people starting showing up in droves and overharvesting". Some people do great things and some people do bad things, regardless of what CAR MANUFACTURER the like or ethnicity/race they are.
  9. Got a van, it has the side rails but not the cross bars. I called the local Toyota dealer and they can get my cross bar add-on for $130 for parts plus $35 install. That seems more than modest. This will be my first canoe and first vehicle with a rack of any kind. Any feedback before I commit to the factory rack? Canoe will weigh under 90 pounds.
  10. I am Hmong and my favorite way to eat fish is to fillet it(yeah, fillet), batter in milk and eggs (yeah, batter), breaded in panko crust, cornmeal or some pre-made fish breading, and deep fried. The sauces I use for dipping are ranch and vinegar. Deal with it. Hmong people very rarely if ever use fish to make fish sauce. That is a southeast Asian recipe but not of Hmong origin and who the hell makes it? I introduce to you, the grocery store. I don't care how fish is prepared, I have and will eat it: pickled herring, raw sushi, cooked whole, filleted, boiled, grilled. Keep this dump on topic: it's about a poaching incident, not about a man being Asian.
  11. I too am having some problems over this issue. My brother is a big bass guy, fancy equipment, all artificial lures, 100% CPR for bass, 99% CPR overall, gives me dump for harvesting. I, on the other hand, am 99% harvest so long as 1.) it's within regulation and 2.) not large specimens. Do I bring a ton of fish home? Hell no. Do I always bring fish home? Very often, yes, like 1 or 2, a handful if I'm having a good day (which is almost never). The twist is that I have a degree in Fish and Wildlife, hold a career as an Environmentalist, worked many years as DNR fishing naturalist teaching kids, and actively support a nonprofit fishing conservation group. I guess my point is there is absolutely nothing wrong with harvesting and we should not judge those who harvest but as DTro pointed out, there are indeed some terrible cases of legal but unethical harvesting.
  12. LoL @ stinkbait: no, carp are not "bottom-feeding, garbage eaters" they are made to be. Do you notice them nibble or tasting your bait (line movement, rod tip movement)? Carp are extremely sensitive: any little disturbance or something unusual, such as feeling the weight of a sinker, the pull of a bobber, a metal hook in their food, and they're spitting it. Occassionally one will hook itself. *With that, try either worm or corn (don't waste time or money with carp gimmick baits on the market aside from Euro-inspired boilies but that's on a whole another level). Worm might trigger a more natural response, mimicking insect larval hatch. Plus, the protein in a worm would be the diet of pre-spawn fish as opposed to veggies. *Use a sinker that will slide freely, such as an egg or dipsey. DO NOT tie the weigh directly onto the line but rather let it slide at will. *Use a small but not tiny circle hook. No bobber. *Cast it out but still within a shallower zone. Reel the line tight then set it and wait. *Most importantly, keep an eye on your rod tip. Don't hold it because you'll get too focused on anticipating the 'feel' of a nibble--it's easier to see a nibble. My suggestion is to set the hook the moment you see your rod twich. Go with a softer, lifting hookset rather than a Bass Masters Championship hookset from hell. ***Don't hope they'll commit to your bait, try to hook them as they're tasting the bait before they spit it out***
  13. I've bonked fish in the head before and had them return to consciousness later. My new method is to snap the spinal cord, 100% guaranteed efficiency. Bleeding it out by cutting the gills may also improve the taste but does not kill as quickly as spine snap. And regarding "who eats bass!? eww", please be respectful. Eating different species of fish is a personal and even socially constructed thought. If you want to be technical, (black) bass are sunfish. Even white bass have a cult-like following by those who have been lucky enough to try their white meat: there's a legend where a host cooked white bass to his guests saying it was walleye; not surprisingly, there was no outcry.
  14. You must have been in the Miesville area? Beautiful photos, so vibrant.
  15. Live bullheads would be the preferred bait but not the "only" bait. Key point: do not overthink it. I've caught small flatheads while aiming for channels. Unless you've had your share of big cats and are using big game equipment, do not pursue flatheads until you've mastered the more abundant channel catfish.
