AGM is constructed in a much more durable way which alieviates the most common form of battery failure (internal injury due to bouncing over rough water common to forward battery placement in tin boats) It also seems that reserve capacity is greater thus can use for longer time between charge. The battery is also maintenance free which I like. I use and recommend the "C" store AGM.

Pros: The MinnKota Vantage is the ultimate backtrolling motor for ease of use and 4 to 1 steering for quick response. The motor is power up and down, variable speed throttle with maximizer for long battery life. Cons: Because the motor has more things to go wrong (ie more powered components)the reliability can come into question.

Buy Rock Solid camper rock deflectors and cut to size. Attach to angle iron which I bolted to frame with two 3/8 bolts. Easy to remove, protects entire rear of vehicle and cost was a little time and < $100.00

I had similar problem and eventually it was determined that the voltage regulator controlling the fuel pump was bad which caused the same problem you are reporting. Good Luck

you are seeing a 160 foot scan with the boat in 20 feet of water with sidescan set to 100 feet(80 feet each direction). To date no zoom is available in the software except the zoom box you can move anywhere on the screen.

Yes the 50 channel antennae is standard in 2009 on all Humminbird units in the 700, 900 and 1100 series.
-
The 50 channel antennae is a drop in external antennae so as long as you are running the most currnt software rev for your unit, the antennae is a replacement for your current antennae. If you have an internal antennae you will have to add the GR-50 as an external antennae. Part number is AS-GR-50 for a suggested retail of $149.99. Guaranteed accuracy of 2.5 meters with instant lock and stronger lock then the GR-16 from 2008 or GR-12 from 2007. 2009 models have the 50 channel antennae included from the factory. Humminbird also offers a high accuracy GPS antennae with 1 meter accuracy for $199.99 which is a drop in(no software upgrade) improvement.

I am on the Humminbird pro staff. The 08 units and 09 units have one hardware update which is the addition of a 50 channel GPS receiver which is a change from the 16 channel receiver in 08. Other then software updates and the one hardware update listed above, no changes were made in 09.

Take the motor in for repairs. Constant pounding on the bow of a boat plays havoc with the compass board in the auto pilot. More then likly the compass board will need replacement. I have seen where the autopilot needs a simple tuning by a qualified technician to make it work properly, but compass board replacement is the most likely problem.

Issues with Lowrance sonars loosing bottom reading...
taw replied to steffanf's question in Equipment-Expert Information*
Problem is specific to Lowrance. Humminbird has no issue whatsoever with losing bottom contact over weeds unless transducer is damaged or weak. TAW -

My Lowrance LMS-332 turns on by its self.
taw replied to fishing4fun's question in Equipment-Expert Information*
sell, sell, sell. Buy Humminbird. Sonar is better (dual beam, dual frequency) more wattage, and customer service second to none. Quality is much improved since Johnson Outdoors bought Humminbird and price point is identical to inferior Lowrance units. -
Sounds like the voltage regulator which supplies power to the fuel pump. My 1997 EFI did the same thing and the boat mechanic I use told me this was a common failure in Merc EFI motors.

Without question go to a bottom bouncer/spinner combo (4-5 ft long) with a nightcrawler, leech or Gulp nightcrawler. Pull the rig on or around the weedline at 0.5 - 1.5 mph. You can cover lots of water and will attract all species of fish, particularly walleyes. Play with the blade color, darker colors on darker days, shiny colors on bright days. Use anywhere from 3/4 to 2 oz bottom bouncers depending on depth and speed.

On-board chargers----Advice Needed
taw replied to JDM_88's question in Equipment-Expert Information*
Stay with the Minnkota three bank with at least 10 amps per bank. The Minnkota charger is the fastest charging due to its temperature compensation combined with three step charging and is UL listed so it is waterproof. Less then 1 percent returns to the factory. Simply the best charger on the market period. -
The Humminbird 787 has several advantages over the Lowrance 522: 1. The Humminbird uses dual beam technology with dual frequency which gives you 2 simultaneous cone angles which increases the viewed area below the boat. 2. The software is much easier to use. 3. The unit has a very bright, crisp picture with the 640 verticle picture display (Lowrance 522 has 480 pixels). 4. The unit has a hemispherical viewing screen which makes it viewable from any angle (it does not wash out like other screens on the market). 5. The unit is seamless with the compatable Navionics software on the gps side. The big drawback the Humminbird has is it's inability to read Lakemaster software. it is seamless with the compatable Navionics software on the gps side.

Fireline is the line used to test and thus graph crankbait dive curves for most of the trolling applications in Precision Trolling. Since repeatability is one of the most important aspect of trolling a crankbait, using the line the testers used to make the dive curves will aid you in placement of the bait at the correct level.

best sonar sold period. Lowrance only wishes they could do what is standard on a Humminbird.

Oil Bath Hubs vs. Traditional Hubs
taw replied to Musky_Madness's question in Equipment-Expert Information*
Musky Madness, Oil bath hubs are the greatest thing ever invented for wheel bearings. Just remember to change the oil annually and replace the seals if water is getting in the hubs (oil will become discolored). I put several thousand miles on my hubs every year and since I went to oil hubs I have had no issues with bearings. -
Marc V, More important then power is cone angle. Look at Humminbird to get easy to use units with multiple frequency/cone angles which will up your odds for finding baitfish and target species. Power of 4000 watts P/P will increase the ability of the wider cone angle to pick up smaller targets on the fringe of the cone. Just remember that a standard Lowrance cone ange of 20 degrees will only show a 3 foot circle below the tranducer in 10 foot of water. A similar Humminbird 60 degree cone will show a 9 foot circle below the tranducer which is how you see much more on a Humminbird then a comparable Lowrance dollar for dollar.

Heidi, A good alternative is the Humminbird 787c2. Price point is the same and with added navionics chip makes a great unit. Come by the Humminbird/Minn Kota booth and I'll show you the unit and how it works. Tim Winterhalter
