Air Compressor

mtwalleye

Question

I am looking to buy an air compressor and need some advice on size. I plan to use it mainly to air up tires on cars, bikes, boat trailer, ATV, etc. I do want a compressor that has enough power to fill tires quickly. I may look at adding a finish nailer in the future. I have looked at the smaller units - 1-1.5 HP, 125-150PSI. Are these big enough to do the job? What do you recommend?

Sears makes a 1hp, 3 gal, 125 psi compressor for around $100. I have seen it as low as $90 on certain sales. I have one and it works good for filling up tires and running a finish and framing nailer off of it with no problem. Sears also has an "extended warranty" you can buy for like $15 -$20 that covers it for an extra year or two. Overall no problems with it at all.

mtwalleye,

For tires, finish nailer, go with a small consumer unit. If you keep it in a cold garage, go oil less, keeping in mind, they are LOUD. They don't last as long but oil is like moleassas if in a cold environment and you will trip breakers.

Yes a 1 to 1/1/2 HP unit is about all you could run on 110/115 volt. (20 AMP breaker, 15 AMP, might be pushing it for 1 1/2 HP unit).

Those horse powers should sufice, for the needs you listed.
