Targeting Burbot

I've been interested in catching these fish since I saw my first one while ice-fishing in Canada last year.

I've heard they are mainly caught while ice-fishing but I'm wondering if there is a way to target them during open-water season. If so, where and how?

We used to catch them above the Sartell dam fishing cutbait on the bottom for cats. Never caught any big ones, but towards dusk, we couldn't keep them off.

You can get them below the Dam at Elk River once in awhile, but they are skinny little dudes, not like the potbellied whoppers you get out of Leech and Mille Lacs during the winter. I don't think that to many of those things are caught during the hot times? I've only heard of an occassional one turning up on Mille Lacs during the summer?

I have once caught a small one in a small wisonsin river in the summer. Your best bet is through the ice. They are not very active in the warm season.

Yeah, I didn't think there would be much luck during the summer. They spawn in the winter months and come shallow for it.
