Duck Hunting ND

Recommended Posts

I used to hunt ND for waterfowl every year, but have not gone in a while. I just got permission to hunt 5,000 acres of fields/pot holes about half way between Grand Forks and Devils Lake. I have never hunted this area, but my thought is that it should be pretty good. Does anyone have any experience in this area? What time of the season is best? Do you hunt fields or pot holes? This year the guy has Sunflowers, Beans, but no corn. Thoughts?

5,000 Acres is a lot of land to cover alone--if you need another let me know. I would just scout the land and see what the ducks are doing and where they are at, then hunt them. Field hunting is always fun but since he doesn't have corn you might have to find a bean field they are feeding at.

That was where I grew up duck hunting 10-15 years ago. Used to be fantastic but it's pretty heavily pressured now but the hunting is still decent. Often gets slow after the first week of the season due to the pressure until some weather pushes birds down. Plenty of water and you'll probably do fine if you scout some.

Looks like I'm headed to ND around Oct 22 or so for a week. We should get there the weekend of MEA, and leave the weekend after. I am guessing the pressure should drop a little bit after that weekend at least. What types of ducks can I expect to shoot around that time with "average" weather for the month? I still haven't taken a Pintail or Canvasback, I would love to get at least one of those during this trip.

That is often a fairly tough part of the season since the resident birds are largely gone and often not much weather has come through to push much down. Depends on the weather though, you could easily hit a big push too. Never know.
