Fishing around Fort Carson

Recommended Posts

Nothing extremely close. These are the ones I hit when I lived out there.

Brush hollow - This is a little no gas motor lake straight down 115. Has bass and crappies probably trout as well. Not terrible for shore fishing but can get crowded with boats at the dam. They draw this lake down heavily during the summer

Lake Pueblo (formerly known as Publo Reservoir) - 30 miles south on I25 and the 10 miles west on hwy 50. Follow the signs and you can't miss it. This is located inside a state park and there is a daily user fee (used to be $5). This was created by damming the Arkansas River and is bigger deeper water. Shore fishing spots are plentiful (entire lake) but I didn't have great luck. Boat would be best but it is heavy with recreational use on the weekends and holidays. Bass, walleyes and northerns as well as catfish, trout and panfish.

11 Mile reservoir - Straight west on hwy 24, again follow the signs from hwy 24 and you will be fine. Inside another state park so there is the daily user fee. Shore fishing the entire lakeshore and boats do very well here. Lake Trout, Kokanee Salmon, Rainbow trout, brown trout, more trout and more trout =) It also has Northerns and Walleyes (not positive on the eye's though).

Spinney Res - Right above 11 mile. All artificial all the time. I am also not sure whether motors are allowed on the lake. I believe it has all the same fish as 11 Mile. I didn't fish this one at all so I don't have a lot of info sorry.

There is a creek that connects Spinney to 11 Mile that is gold medal water.

Antero Res - Further down Hwy 24 I believe. Never went there but the ice fishing is supposed to be awesome.

NE corner of the state is John Martin res which is supposedly closer to what the lakes are like here in MN. Never fished it as it got hit pretty hard from what I was told and I didn't own a boat.

Straight east on hwy 50 out of Pueblo you can get to a couple more warm water lakes called NeeNosh (sp) and Queen. I shed these once but had zero luck and I am not sure the water levels ever came back on these two.

Arkansas river all along hwy 115. There are pull offs all along the river and pleanty of places to fish for trout there. Also I believe there are places you can fish it following it east towards Kansas.

Many many streams that I never fished are up in the mountains.

Keep your skin from making contact with the water in the reservoirs as that is a $75 dollar fine, unless you are waterskiing or jetskiing.

And to add to the above...

If you and/or your son has the time to look for them, try to catch the wipers (hybrid striper x whitebass). Pueblo has world record potential and I kid you not... I'd loosen the drag a bit if you run into an aggressive school.

As far as Pueblo and the SE reservoirs go, they almost all have wipers. Pueblo has impressive walleyes too but due to the recreational use of this lake, night bites tend to be better (plus, you get out of the hot & dry CO sun).

Here's a rumored potential world record wiper caught at Pueblo this spring that the guy decided to eat instead of officially weighing it in (which I'm unsure is rumor or not)... Either way, Pueblo kicks out a few pigs close to this size each year and it has lots in the 5 lb to 10 lb range. I insist... Lube your gear and go after em!
