PropsterII
'93 Merc 40 hp tiller with the knob/lever in front for shifting. Put the boat in yestersay for the first time in a year and she started right up and ran great, except it wants to jump out of reverse if you give it a little throttle. Does it just need adjustment with the linkage on the side of the engine just inside the housing, or are the gears not quite meshed properly? Also, trim works great with the hand switch on the side of the motor (both up and down), but on the foot trim only the down works. Is that a connection or a switch inside the foot control? Thanks guys.
h8go4s
I had a '98 Merc tiller with the same problem. I fixed it by adjusting the linkage. Don't know if that was a permanent fix because I sold the rig that fall.As for the foot switch, it sounds like a wiring problem or corrosion/dirt in the switch to me.Ron. marine_man
It could be as simple as a linkage adjustment.. that's where I'd start.Your floor trim switch you'll need to do a little more looking. Tilt / Trim are three wire systems... Red = Power, Green = Down, Blue = Up.Knowing that you can go down means the green and red connections are good.. the issue it he blue wire. Follow the wires from the tilt / trim foot control box to where it connects to the motor and make sure your connections are good.marine_man
