  1. I am looking at making my own venison brats this year, but am having trouble finding recipe's and instructions. I'm looking for specific recipes including spices, etc. Then, do they need to be smoked? Some say yes, others don't mention it. Even if you can send to to good information, it is more than I can find now. Thanks in advance. Deeky
  2. On one hand, I agree, $110 out of my pocket would be steep. But looking at the bigger picture, read through the June conservation tales and count the number of repeat offenders. Are the penalties really too high in the bigger picture if they are failing to encourage people to stop the behavior? Isn't that their purpose? Sucks that you had to pay out $110, but like you said, you'll never do it again. Good for you. Looking at the bigger picture, (sorry, I'm going to step outside the bounds of fishing) I think a couple of months for drink driving is not nearly steep enough when they go out under the influence again and kill someone. A little more dramatic, but the same concept as fishing laws/fines.
  3. Tom - I would look at it more as an 'aura' than a glow. Short of the sun, lightbulbs, and flourescing paint, all light that you see is reflected light. If an object appears red, it is absorbing all light colors other than red. Titanium dioxide reflects all colors of light, including the ultraviolet spectrum (white light is the presence of all colors). I think the best way to explain the uv glow of TiO2 is thinking of it like a very white piece of paper in direct sunlight. It is reflecting so much light, it is difficult to tell where the edges of the paper are. It appears to glow, except TiO2 gives off the aura in the uv spectrum.
  4. I also prefer a snell knot for spinner rigs and such. The easiest way I have found to tie them actually comes from my fly tying. I simply run the thread through the eye, and then do a whip finish with the tag end. Took just a little practice to figure out how to hold things, but now it's a matter of seconds. If you don't know the whip finish, do a quick search on line and you will get illustrated instructions on some good fly tying site. It's also the same if you have ever whip-finished the end of a rope.

    Am I Wrong?

When things are done wrong and people refuse to work with you, my experience has been that their superiors like to hear about it. Whether or not you fight the ticket, let the CO's superior know about it. Also, send an email to the state legislator of the area. They don't want bad blood in a group of people that feeds their economy. Think about it - if things got too out of hand, people would simply stop going to URL to fish to avoid the hastle. How much money would be lost? I know a bus company that was inappropriately and repeatedly being harrassed by the dot cops. A letter to the legislator and a follow up phone call and there were no more problems. This definitely sounds like something the system needs to address. Use the system to its fullest, just do it the right way.
  6. Corey I've fished there in the day and my experience has been that even when the crappies are feeding, you don't see a crappie till about sundown, but the sunnies tend to bite well. I've also fished in the morning and the crappies hit until the sun gets above the horizon. But I have been fairly immobile about it. I'll get out earlier soon and try moving around more. Thanks for the suggestion. Deeky
  7. I know other places I have been it is law that if ANYONE asks to see your liscense, you are required to show it to them, CO or not. Is that the case here in Minnesota? As for sticking a hand gun in someone's face because he asked to look at their gun, that's pretty ballsy. I'm not sure I wouldn't shoot from the hip. But then I wouldn't ask to inspect a strangers gun either. Anyone know about being required to show your license?
  8. OK, what's the scoop? I was out last night on a lake that consistently has a night bight. I was near the bottom of a break in 21 feet, with the basin dropping to somewhere around 30-35 feet relatively near by and the top of the break being around 12-15 feet. I could see the crappies comming through between 12-15 feet. They would even follow my bait up, but then swim away. It has been like this for quite a while appearantly. I tried plastic, rattle spoon, jigging rap, tiny jig with just a euro. Was jigging, jiggling, slow raising, and deadsticking. No takers. Am I seeing the fish in transit on their way to feeding? Do I need to move up on the flats a little further or are they just not biting? Not a whole lot of time to get out, so I need to make it count. Help! Deeky
  9. Sorry Aberdak, I must have missheard about Mina. But that would make sense with Waubay, I think they might run sleds out there. Not quite as many choices right around Aberdeen as there are even around Webster. Good luck on the search.
  10. I know I had trouble when I was first using a flasher. I would see blips at a certain depth, and then drop my lure to that depth and didn't catch nearly as much. When I would keep it above the fish, I had better luck. It looked like the fish were rising to the lure, but when I was able to see on a bright day, they were actually above where they were marked on the depthfinder. Because of the cone, they were off to the side, and marked deeper than they really were. I was usually fishing below them. If you are marking them at 17 feet, I would say don't be afraid to work your bait around the 15-16 foot mark. Not sure if this is an issue for you, but I know it was one of those little hitches that threw me for a while.
  11. Aberdak How is the water in Richmond in the winter? We have a reunion at the group camp each summer and the water seemed pretty murky. Seems like the relatives are usually talking about either Mina or heading east to Waubay. Have you lived there a long time? I've got tons of family in town. Deeky
  12. I did some searching here and couldn't find much. If you had your choice of colors for pike lures, what would they be? I'm tying some flies for a swap and the range is pretty wide open. Thanks for the input. Deeky

    Bobber Talk

I also love the icebusters, but quit using them last year in favor of spring bobbers. The ice busters are great if you are staying at one depth, but the crappies last year required a slowly rising bait, and the spring bobber had that versatility. Just wouldn't work with an icebuster. The spring bobber is now my go to, unless I'm outside and in the wind. Then you can't tell what is a bight and what is wind.
  14. I built one on cross country skis and love it. I used basically the same idea of screwing up into 2x4 blocks, and then attaching them to the deck. On glare ice with a tailwind, the sled keeps right up beside me without me pulling. The other thing I did was put removable sides on it (like the slat sides on kids' wagons). If I am going without the portable, they hold everything in going over snowbanks, and then can pull one side off to sit on the sled for a little extra height. Or I can pull all the sides off and balance my semi-portable on top. With the portable (with two plywood sides and canvas in the middle), power auger, and other gear, the cc skis still pull really easy and quiet over the ice or snow. Just don't counter sink the screws too far into the bottom of the skis - the middle of mine was really soft material. Deeky
  15. I just spooled up some Power Pro Ice on a rod and noticed the coating that would rub off, particularly where I tied the knot. What is this coating? If it comes off, does my line soak up water? Is it supposed to come off? Thanks for the info. Deeky
