I would say if you've seen a few smaller bucks no harm in taking one out. I have been bow hunting for 3 years, without harvesting a deer. Passing on spikes and forks. This year has been mostly buttons and fawns with a few does. I did see a 6 point at about 50 yds. Normally I wouldn't shoot a little buck before gun season. Sunday night 2 deer came crashing through right at my stand being chased by a 6 pointer. I stopped him with a grunt at 9 or 10 yards and stuck him. He went about 40 yards and it was over. It all happened within about 45 seconds if that, one of the most exciting things I've ever done it was awesome. Now if that same deer was wandering around at say 25 to 30 yards it would have got a free pass, not because of my shooting skills but i probably would have had enough time to talk myself out of taking a shot. Maybe I got excited with the first deer coming through but for me sometimes its all about how the opportunity arises. Absolutely no regrets on harvesting a small buck for my first ever bow kill. If you get another chance at them go with your first gut instinct.I think any deer taken with a bow is incredible anyway.
