  1. If that's the case learned something new there, thanks Propster. Going to have to reconsider how I store my activated carbon clothing vs "regular". Thanks for the tip.
  2. Get the rubbermaid tote you talked about, add some pine branches, prairie grass, or whatever is in the area you generally hunt, and call it good.
  3. I believe it's illegal to use electronic aids (cell phones, etc.) in the "taking of game", which I believe is defined as something like "a deer is coming your way from the west". I don't believe based on what I've read (too lazy to find a link) that electronics are illegal if used to comply with rules and stay legal (i.e.: we just got a deer, we are limited out). Regardless, I think there is some type of proximity rule that applies here. Don't think your fellow party member can be hunting 2 miles away and be considered in your party. The rules (pg 75) defining party hunting say must be "hunting together". "Together" leaves room for interpretation, but at a minimum I would think need to be in the same geographical area of property.
  4. This is a very helpful topic, thanks for sharing the info. Was going to ask if poster could do a video, but a quick youtube search found one that shows the rope method discussed in the thread. Rope example starts at about 1:20 of the video:
  5. I've got them on my Doge Ram after running BF Goodrich TA/KO's the two previous sets. They're OK, but I miss the Goodrich's when on the lake, these just don't seem to bite as well. For what it's worth, I'm going back to the Goodrich's next set.
  6. I've searched the past posts, but would really appreciate current informed opinons on a what I should consider for a new 60hp 4 stroke tiller for my 1988 Lund Predator (recent used would be fine too, but hard to find it appears). Been running a '88 50hp Johnson 2 stroke for 20 years, time to upgrade. I'm leaning Yamaha F60, but no special reason for that other than generally hearing good things over the years, and the variable speed tiller handle option it offers seems to be great for trolling, which I do a lot of. Boat is rated for 60hp (it's an '88, so don't think 4 strokes were contemplated then in the ratings), not sure if that matters or not. Would really appreciate informed opinions/suggestions on what to target for a new engine.
  7. Andy, Suggest you go to the "sharing recipes" forum. If you don't see any do a seach of that forum for sausage. Bet you'll find quite a bit of info.
  8. Alaskadreamin, Thanks for you info - you're about to have mail. I've decided to wait until next year so I can plan properly, and I can't tell you how much I appreciate all the info you guys are providing. There's no substitute for hearing what those of you who have gone have experienced, what to do, what to avoid, etc.. Thanks a ton!
  9. Keep coming back to dry mix of 2/3 cornmeal, 1/3 flour. Dip in milk with 1 egg added, dip in cornmeal mix, and fry in butter/olive oil. Cornmeal adds nutty flavor, not too heavy like some batters. My favorite!
  10. Thank you very much for all the very helpful and detailed info guys - much appreciated! Still working on this, hoping I'm not too late for this season, but I don't want to rush it and "settle", if I have to I may end up moving this back one year. I'll know more when I've got a bit more of a plan firmed up and find out how booked things are. Thanks again!
  11. Starting from scratch with this trip, I've told my son since he was young when he graduates from college we're going on an Alaskan fishing trip. Well, he graduates in May and the time is now. We're pretty experienced fishermen in our part of the country (MN), with past trips to LOTW and other locations, but not sure where to start with an Alaskan trip when we won't have our own gear/boat etc., and we'll be at the mercy of advice, charters, etc.. May also be including my 70 year old father who's in good health, so looking for suggestions on the following: 1) What months should we target for good fishing action? 2) What species to target - my intial thoughts are salmon and halibut, but really don't know what other options might be available. 3) For those that have done it, what are the "must do" activites? Doesn't have to be all fishing, if there's other outdoor things to experience in Alaska, would be interested in that too. 4) How does one go about selecting a trustworthy guide/outfitter to book through? 5) What type of price range for a one week trip should I expect? 6)Any other general tips much appreciated. Thanks much, appreciate any advice from those that have been there and have experiences/recommendations to share.
  12. One thing I would suggest checking first is whether there is an "S cable" in use. This is a cable used in shallow water to reduce the power below the minimum, hence the term "S", or suppression cable. If this cable is in place, it could very well be the cause of you not having enough power to get a bottom signal in deeper water. You can quickly identify if your vex has this by seeing if there's a short (4" or 5") piece of cable between your vex and the rest of your transducer cable where it plugs into the vex.
  13. I can't help you, but Yahoo does have a Lowrance IFinder group that I've found helpful. Here's a link, try joining and posting your question there: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ifinder_gps/
