X-15

I was recently in Cabelas looking at X-15's and was told not to buy the one with the dual transducers. Does any one own one and have troubles with the transducers. Also are there any other known porblems with the X-15. I also considered and Vexalar Edge but heard they have problems at speeds over 20 mph.
Any advice would be appreciated.

The dual transducers are for blue water, meaning deep water. The x-15 is an awesome unit.

Hi D-Man,

A side question-
You seem pretty familiar with the X-15. I have the unit on a Tyee I just picked up that does not have the GPS module. I was told that one could add a hand held to the unit as long as it was NMEA compatible (I have the Garmin eMap). The manual isn't real clear about this. Can you (or anyone else)help here?

I also have the x-15 its a great unit and you dont need dual transducers.Also I believe you can get the GPS modual added on after

Thanks for the response. I can get the module for around $300 but was hoping I could link my existing GPS as I think? my manual says I can.

Just womdering if anyone has had experience with this.....

I don't have any experience hooking up a hand held GPS to a sonar, but I do know that your e-map is NMEA compatible. So if your X-15's manual says you can hook it up I don't see why not. I wonder were you can find the proper cords to hook it up. Maybe do a little browsing around the LEI, Garmin, or Lowrance websites. That's interesting to know that you can hook a hand held up. It can save people some money that already have hand held units.........

I will do some poking around and see what I can come up with as far as the connector goes. The manual does show direct wiring connections (what color for NMEA SEND and RECEIVE transmissions). The X-15 has an RS232 ready connector (round plug with...6 or 8 holes?) which is for a PC hookup (upgrades). Looks like I just need an RS232 male (eMap) to the round connector on the X-15 (female)...? Will post back if I find anything if anyone is interested. Would like to use that $300 for the minnow/barley kitty instead!

You Can use the NMEa output from the E-map to show GPS position on the X-15. But you will not have much more than a plotter screen on the GPS side. Almost all of the mapping detail is read off the data card system. You have mapping on the E-map, so your not gaining anything tying it into the X-15. But remember that the E-map is not waterproof.

I did find out I could hardwire the GPS to the unit but WAS wondering what good it would do without the Mapsource software and MMC cards...If my GPS ever dies (or gets wet) I'll get that GPS module.
