  1. Carp were jumping all over at my favorite spot yesterday. Couldn't entice one bite tho Frustrating!
  2. Noticed the river has opened up all around there. Anyone know of some good carp spots or holes?
  3. So I recently moved here from Maine. The fiance wanted to come back to help with her aging parents. The economy in Maine is terrible and I like to fish so I was all for coming here. Only thing I miss is friends and family. Truthfully mostly my friends lol. So looking to make new friends. So if you like MMA, video games (Xbox one), general nerdy stuff like home theaters, computers, comics, I also brew beer and wine and make moonshine. Be awesome to make some new friends who can show me the ropes or tricks, fishing species we had not in Maine, carp, sturgeon, big catfish, pike, walleye, musky. I know nothing about ice fishing. I know the regular season is coming to an ad but the gf's dad has a practically new boat that I can use whenever I want.
  4. They were breaking off when I used mono. No rocks, fishing in a lake but there were weeds and brush and with mono bigger fish would either get in that stuff and break me off or if I tried to keep them from going there they'd break off. No break off probs with the braid just not getting as many strikes which seems to be a weather\water temp thing.
  5. I worry if I use worms I'm gonna catch nothing but bluegill :-( if it warms up again despite how relaxed and comfy fishing from the dock is I'll take out the boat. The fish were still breaching last I went but seemed to be more so out past where I could cast.
  6. So I started carp fishing about a month and a half ago. I'm from Maine, no carp there. So I'm addicted to catching them, so big and so tough. Started fishing with my 8lb and 10 lb bass poles. Just using corn and was hooking a ton of carp. Unfortunately I was losing a lot of fish. Went to 15 lb test line (high vis green really helped watching the line for bites) lost less fish but still lost too many. So my poles were 6' ers so I went and got 7' med heavy rods. Then new reels and finally on advice here went with 25lb braid, with 17lb fluorocarbon leaders. Now I'm not sure if its the weather or if its this line but yes I am losing less fish but I am also not hooking as many. Now the braid is thin and strong and easy to cast. But it floats. Also its black, wasn't thinking I should have gotten a brighter color, its a dam to see except how I can see it floating on top of the water. So is it the weather? Or are the fish seeing the braid and not going for my bait?
  7. If you don't fish with the bail open how do you keep your rod from getting pulled into the water? Hold it all the time? I fish off a boat dock. Just got new rods and reels so not doing a bait runner this year.
  8. I'm in a lake there is some interference which is why I gotta watch the lines. In reading I thought the best way to fish carp was the no resistance on the line when they take the bait. Cuz of them being smartand dropping the bait. Was why i fish like this. Tho I understand you can't do it in certain situations like yours. I'll tell you tho seeing that lone zipping out, and sometimes they are really moving, then grabbing the rod and flipping the bail over, whew man that's fun!
  9. I use a slip sinker, swivel and a 2' leader with a small hook with corn on it I leave my bail open the fish takes the bait and starts swimming I see the line going out and grab the rod and flip over the bail and set the hook. I am literally like Quint in jaws. I'm sitting there staring at the line. I first fished with 8 lb low vis green line. Well I lost a lot of fish to break offs and the line was hard to see watching for strikes. Went to 12lb regular mono. Lost less fish but still too many AND I couldn't see the line good. Went to 25lb high vis like neon green line. Great visibility but it was so thick it casted like dump and liked to jump off the reel as soon as I flipped the bail to cast. So on the advice here got new 7' rods, new reels, AND 20lb braid that is as thick as 8lb line and 17 pound clear fluorocarbon to use for leader material. So the braid is thin and dark and is gonna be a dam to see especially if the sun ain't shining brightly. I see some cheap strike indicators on hsolist I might try but in the meantime what do you guys do that use spinning gear and fish with the bail open that have hard to see line?
  10. So I put on braided line. Its dark green and thin. Will be fabulous. One thing though, I will have trouble seeing the line. What do you guys use for strike indicators.
  11. Two lines is fair for every species. In some ways its like the dark ages here I swear. One rod, video stores??? And worse of all liquor stores and no buying liquor on Sunday???? So weird.
  12. That makes no sense???? They call them rough fish. They have tried to eradicate them every which way. You can use them as bait for other fish. There are no size limits or quantity limits. A guy told me yesterday that he and his friend used to seine net them in another lake. Yet they will fine you for using two rods??? Fine if you are using something that could catch other fish but I'm using corn, to my knowledge nothing else eats that.
  13. Where I'm fishing if you don't grab the rod pretty quick the fish will be in the weeds or brush so I gotta watch the lines pretty much 100% of the time a strike alarm would be nice. Someday I'll have those nice ones the Europeans use.
  14. No bait glue super glue type stuff. Search amazon "bait glue"
  15. 2 is enough for one person if the fish are biting. The slower the bite the more rods I'd want and spread out to cover more area. I'm still fishing 2 rods if the game warden comes I'll play ignorant and say I thought the laws didn't apply to carp
