Jaspernuts
99 fishawk with 115 johnson. My volt meter reads normal at idle, but when throttle is opened up it goes up to 15 volts. Is it charging too much and do you think it will fry my battery?
BobT
What do you mean by "normal" at idle. I would expect it to put out about 14.5v give or take so it doesn't sound like too much to me. You voltmeter can be off by a small percentage too.
boatfixer
Most systems will go to 14.6 like Bob mentioned. If it is hitting 15+ I'd have it checked out, the regulator could be bad
marine_man
Your gauge could be somewhat inaccurate as well... I'd check the battery with a multimeter while you rev the engine up to see how accurate your gauge is, unless this is something new that didn't happen last year.marine_man
Jaspernuts
Yeah, I will check with a multimeter. It did not do this last year. The gauge has always read 13-14. Now it spikes to 15-15.5.
