Fishing Hole sizes?

I have a 10" and like it, but I'm thinking about an 8" Ice Gator.

10" is great for a perm. Keeps the hole open longer..

But other than that. A 10" hole is a litte too dangerous for my tastes. A smaller child can fall completely into a 10" hole and and adult steps in one and can easily slam all the way down to their hip.. I know that last one for FACT !

Its all relative. I have never caught a fish that I couldnt get through an 8" hole.. and if that EVER happens.. I may just retire from fishing all together!

When I was a teenager I had a pike wedge itself in a 8 inch hole by opening its mouth. After several attempts of lowering it back down it kept on opening it's mouth while being pulling up. Lost it when the hook ripped free (did not have a gaff hook.

Now when I bought my own power auger, I went with the 10". That past experience won't happen again.

9 incher for me, easier to get them BIG fishes head turned up and into a bigger hole. Except for my early ice trips where I take a 7 inch hand drill. I have had fish up to the hole that would never fit thru an 8 incher, nor my 9 incher, or even a big 10 inch!!

Got to love the 10". they always saw you will be able to fit anyfish through a 8" hole but i love the extra room for turning heads in the hole on the monster if you know what i mean.

8 inch is plenty and not to hard on the body later in the season. 10 inch late in the season, and knowing you will be punching a few holes, will get tough and you more than likely drill less holes. Just speaking from experience.

Safety is also a factor if kids are around. Also as said I have not had a fish that would not fit up an 8 inch hole.

I like my 10" hole. It also makes it possible to see into the water below the ice a little better so it's easier to turn a fish up the hole. I also like it because then I can fit my transducer in the hole with my line much easier.

I switched this year from 8" to 10" and I really like the extra room. No more getting the line wrapped around the transducer.

I dont think it matters between an 8" and a 10" if you step into it. Your filling your boot either way.

Ya I also drill 2 holes with my 8" Nils. 1 for fishing 1 for ducer.

Since everyone here likes the large drills, is there any interest in a 9" auger for a Jiffy model 30? I went to a smaller drill a couple of years ago and no longer need it the big boy. Post your contact info and I'll get in touch with you.

has anyone seen a 12" auger. i saw a ice hole on a lake where it appeared a tipup was set up.(snow wasnt moved around anywhere by it). and it had a 12-13" inch hole. i couldnt believe it, i actually measured it. i have never seen an auger that big on the ice? anybody ?

when scouting i use a 8" but for fishing you cant beat a 10". If you have it why not use it?

i like the 10 but i hear a vexilar will fit pretty nice threw one that big? i dont own a auger yet but thinking a jiffy stx is pretty sweet and prolly will go with a 8 since i dont want my flasher at the bottom if it does happen to get knocked in.

I know that 12" augers were made in years past. A friend's dad had one, I cant remember the brand. His dad liked using it for trout fishing. He said it took 2 men to run it. Not sure where it went when his dad passed away.
