Awesome fish! I am surprised she came out of water that shallow. Definitely not your textbook wintering hole. Makes me wonder if we truly know as much as we think about smallmouth wintering behavior. Good color on that fish too. Most of the smallies I caught just prior to freeze up were very pale and looked like what you would expect from an inactive wintering fish. Yours looks like it's ready to rumble!

Pond in northeast IA. By mid afternoon the temp back at the end of the small finger was near 60 while the main body was high 40s. The bass were more active after about 1pm.

Gotcha, I just picked up my boat Sunday and most of the lakes I drove past still had ice crazy

I had 48 degrees on pool 2 yesterday. water is so dirty and current is so fast there is just about nothing going on at all. Seen the commercial fisherman take about 5000 pounds worth of drum while I was out though, that was pretty cool.

Was very fortunate to catch a smallmouth of a lifetime yesterday evening. Fish was caught in SD btw...

The fish measured 20", unfortunately I did not have a scale. Let her go for another to catch. Might get a replica, haven't decided yet.
