It's pretty useful way to calculate what will be in focus, and also shows just how sliver thin DOF is when your subject is just past the minimum focus distance of the lens. http://www.tawbaware.com/maxlyons/calc.htm] When you've done the calulation, pay attention to the depth of focus result, not the depth of field result. For the calculator depth of field is the tiny portion that's in sharpest focus. For what your eye will actually perceive to be in focus, look at the depth of focus reading.
