how much weight on tip ups

i used a tip up yesterday i had 4 large split shot on however this was a small sucker 4 inches long what i noticed is the sucker kept swimming up alot like i didnt anchor it enough is it ok to have the sucker swim up i thought this would cause bad hook ups i use 6 inch leaders steel and put the split shot on the tip up line and the leader. is there a better lead weight system to use any help would be great.

I use braided dacron line (the black stuff) and a floro leader, and do not usualy use any split shot. Mabe that is just me, but it has always worked.

Where did you hook your sucker? If the hook was to far forward in the body it will cause them to swim up. Try hooking them farther back.
