I am confused on what to buy???

Recommended Posts

I currently have a Vexilar FL-8 flasher, but I want to ether purchase a new FL-20 or a LX-5. The problem is, I seen the VX 1 at Gander today and like the fine line graph and at a price of 200, I could still get a lower end camera. What say you guys?? I may be going to the show next week in St. Paul to puchase the item.

Mr. genz catches fish with an fl-8 so you dont need a super fine line, you dont need a flasher with zoom. they are handy in some situation get the 18 and a couple JM rods you wont regret it. been using my 18 for 3-4 years and have no reason to upgrade. I just hope ya buy a vex.

The VX-1 is a great starter flasher and deserves full credit. However, if you're using a FL-8 and are looking for an upgrade don't sell yourself short. Go for the LX-5 and you'll never look back. Others have said good things about the FL-18 and FL-20 and they too are good. I'm a fan of the fine lines of the Marcum.

A cheap low end camera is just that. In the long run you'll kick yourself for going cheap on the camera. If you have a certain budget, I'd seriously look at the higher end flasher.

Get the better flasher and don't worry about the camera. They are a decent toy but don't do you near the good of a good flasher.

I would also say go high end flasher. If you have an Fl-8 the vx1 wont be an upgrade at all really unless you unit is going bad. Cameras are fun at times but like sandman said not always that useful for catching fish so I woul say there are better places to spend the money.

Thanks for the replys guys. I hope I didn't turn this into a debate over brands of flashers too much. I will have to get more info at the show next week and make a better decision.

First off....forget the camera! That is more of a novelty item. As far as Vexilar FL-18, or the Marcum LX5....those are like comparing two super hot twin sisters and asking yourself which one is better looking. They both rock!

As long as there are different flasher brands, there will be flasher wars. grin

You have the right idea, tho. Get as much info on each one as you can before you drop the coin. And let's face it, they aint cheap.

So far you should have learned not to bother with a low end camera, and the difference between your FL-8 and the VX-1 is very little except the VX has bottom zoom. So, while it's a great flasher, it's not really an upgrade for you.

I already have an FL-8 though, so I am kinda stuck on a camera. But then the idea of a better flasher sounds good too.

In the event of the twin sister thing, I would take em both.

Some of the biggest benefit of a camera IMHO is that you can learn a lot more about how various jigging motions effect the movement of your jig. If you have kids it can be some fun video entertainment to keep them busy.

If you fish out of a permanent, I could see possibly justifying if I had all the other must haves. But for going portable, you have to ask youself, do you really want to haul around extra 5lbs of equipment?

Commando,at least you got the sister deal figured out.Cheap is cheap.I think in the long run you would live to regret buying a cheap camera.Just think that it should be something you should buy the the best you can afford. You already know how good your flasher is.So it's a personal choice.

And don't forget.....you can sell your FL-8 for at least $200....and that money will go right into the new flasher!

Go for the new Hummingbird. You will be really impressed if you can find someone that knows how to turn it on demo mode and show you the features. The sales associates are still catching up to speed on them. they have the best of Marcum and Vexilar and then some. Just my opinion.

Personally, I'd rathole the money and keep fishing with the 8. An 8 is a wonderful machine -- certainly at least 90% as good as anything else out there. Purchasing up from there just gets you into the realm of diminishing returns.

I was facing the same decision and I chose the VX-1 and I am totally satisfied with it great deal and great product for the money.

    • I hear ya. Although unlike CWD, I don't think there will be as much debate among different hunting groups about how bad the effects are and what, if anything, should be done about it.  Doesn't help the deer any, but at least it won't turn into debates/accusations/conspiracy theories that rival any political campaign.
    • Great anything else?  Start the slaughter!  😠
    • does he need to?  Sounds like he put a whoopin on the boys in the one practice he showed up and played in...
    • This is not good news:   http://www.startribune.com/virus-new-to-state-s-deer-inflict-quick-and-suspicious-deaths-in-herd-near-twin-cities/497832721/   "Quick and suspicious" deaths of several deer this month in a captive herd south of the Twin Cities are being attributed to a virus never before seen in deer in Minnesota, state officials said Wednesday.   The Minnesota Board of Animal Health has confirmed the first cases of epizootic Hemorrhagic disease (EHD) in seven animals in a small herd of captive white-tailed deer in Goodhue County. There is no specific treatment or vaccine available in this country. Six of the deer died this month, the agency said, while a remaining buck "appears healthy at this time and is showing no clinical signs associated with this disease."   While this is the first detection of EHD among deer in the state, it is widespread across North America. There are no known health risks to humans, the Board of Animal Health said.   EHD has previously been detected in two Minnesota cattle in southern Minnesota — in Brown County in 2012, and Murray County in 2013.   "This virus is transmitted between deer by biting midges, or gnats, which are most active in the fall before they are killed by the first frost of the season," said Dr. Mackenzie Reberg, senior veterinarian with the Board of Animal Health. "These bugs can't travel far on their own, and we're concerned by this detection because the herd owner hasn't moved deer onto the property for several years."   The "quick and suspicious deaths of the animals," as the agency's announcement characterized them, alarmed the owner, who worked with a veterinarian to submit tissues from the carcasses to the Iowa State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory for investigation and confirmation.   Many deer species may be infected with EHD, but white-tailed deer are highly susceptible and experience high rates of mortality. Most die within 36 hours of clinical signs, which can include fever, anorexia, lethargy, stiffness, respiratory distress, oral ulcers, and severe swelling of the head and neck.   The Board has notified the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources of the newly confirmed cases.
    • Not so Young dumb and full of............   Anymore?  😜
    • I think Negan should be in a cell that has a couple walkers in a cell on each side. lol
    • So, is Butler playing in the season opener? Has he even practiced, other than that one infamous time?
    • 2 episodes in, and I don’t have much of anything to complain about. Not great episodes by any means, but not bad either.
    • Good luck to you all. Sounds like a great trip.
    • Thanks Scoot!  Yes, we have our bear spray, brought a couple extra cans to keep in our packs besides what we have our on hips.   Hopefully it remains there the whole trip. Going to try and keep this updated during our trip. My son is taking video production class in school, hopefully he can put something together when we get back. Signing off for now, going to have lunch with the wife before I head home, grab the last cooler and pick my son up from school!
