COYOTE WITH A BOW?!?!?!?

Recommended Posts

Anyone do it? I've been thinking of doing it over the holidays and checking out calls and lures at Fleet Farm. I've read articles and know it'll be a tough go. But anyone with experience doing it?

A buddy of mine watched one bed down last year and did a stalk on it and got it! Got up to about 13 yards and let him have it i guess. Sounds like a pretty exciting deal

Very tough to get with bow, had two working near my stand last year shotgun hunting, let them walk for a while knew there was good buck in the area, they finally came down the field edge about 15yds. in front of me decided to very slowly pull up on one as it was looking away. somehow it sensed me and instantly ran, they are not called wiley coyotes for nothing.

I've gotten one once with the bow, it was by accident, he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. It was fun, they just go stiff and tip over. Pretty cool. I don't know if I'd target one with the bow though, that would be tough unless you are in an area that was lousy with coyotes.

I dont know of anyone who has done it "on purpose". Most of the time they just happen by and get taged in a shooting lane.

When it comes to calling and targeting 'yotes it is usualy with shotguns. At least the guy's I hunt with are shotgun shooters. We hunt at night though.

I know its not going to be nearly as easy as with a gun, but I've read several articles on how to do it with a bow and it looks interesting. May have to give it a try.

Anyone have a favorite call and/or moving lure?

Do a search for "Verminator". It is some hilbilly that targets coyote bobcat and fox with his bow. He called 150 coyotes in to make the movie. It is pretty funny but not for the soft stomach. Pretty graphic.

I've heard of a couple people doing it. I would say its not more difficult that trying to get one with a shotgun and buckshot.

If you can call one in close enough the rest is about making the shot.

I stuck a coyote 3 years ago in Freeborn County. He was walking along the edge of a standing corn field, I grunted at him to get him to stop, and shot him at 11 yards. Saw more coyotes than deer that year.

I've shot one coyote and missed a couple with a bow, they all happened to come by while I was deer hunting. Also took some red fur off a fox but never did find him frown

I have never targeted them with a bow but have shot a couple while deer hunting in a tree stand. I have also missed a few too.

    • You sure seem to say Grill a lot though! 😏
    • I have an old MES 30that I put a new element in right before I got my pellet grill. I decided that all of the wet chips is what raised havoc on the last element, so now I run a smoke tube that I burn pellets in. The nice part is that I can now do cold smoking
    • You could but that's just another thing and I like to make bigger batches. Like 50 # plus and I like them hanging. The MES is marginal at best for this and I have the cold smoker attachment on that.   If you just want small runs of stuff that might work.
    • Can you put a cold smoker box on the side of yours? That would be a good set up for sausage, sticks, etc.
    • Yep.....😊     Nothing wrong with that. I've just decided I like to cook great BBQ as easily and lazily as possible. 😋
    • I'm still keeping the MES until I make my fridge smoker. The Pellet grill is great for some things but I still like a regular smoker for sausages, sticks etc.
    • No, I wanted both in one package.     A pellet grill IS a smoker and takes just as much time to cook low and slow as any other smoker.
    • Boat prices are INSANE!!! Even used boats are still rediculous.   As far as buying old used boats and rebuilding them for profit, I think you’ll be hard pressed to break even, let alone make a profit (unless you find one for dirt cheap). An old boat is still an old boat even if it’s been fixed up.
    • So you really wanted a fancy Grill, not a smoker? Smokers do take up a lot more time but I'm having a lot of fun with my Char grill smoker.
    • What the.... didn't you just get that for x-mas?  A great read on pellet grills gents, call me cheap or old school but I'm still stuck on open pit and charcoal on the big rig.
